I shot a big MI swamp buck this year with my Marlin 1895 Guide gun. He was chasing does and finally stopped long enough for a shot. He was quartering slightly towards me when he stopped at 60 yds. I put the cross hairs of the VX-3 1.75-6 set on 4x on the back side of his shoulder and sent a 300 gr BST on its way. He dropped at the shot but managed to get up an run into the cedar swamp about 50 yds before he piled up. The BST gelled the lungs and exited on the last rib leaving an exit hole the size of a quarter.
He tipped the scale at 200 lbs dressed weight and is 3.5 yrs old.

Congrats on your buck, he does look big bodied and apparantly tough too getting up and running after taking a hit from your 45/70.

Congratulations, Jim. That fellow does look to be in excellent shape. I'm certain he'll make a welcome addition to the larder.

Nice work, Jim! Always fun to get close with a lever gun, isn't it? I've got the old Win94 30-30 in the lineup later this year and hope to tag a nice buck with it, down in the thick woods off the mountain. Swamp buck hunting takes me back to my youth down in panhandle Florida. No deer as big bodied as that brute, but lots of 60yd shots through thick cover at bucks chasing does!

What a pig! That is a great buck! Glad to see the 45-70 claiming another deer this year! That should be a good amount of meat for the freezer. Scotty

Man Jim that deer has been eating pretty good in the swamp I'd say! Nice buck! Had it been shot in the past in the right rear leg or is that a battle scar?

Wow JD, real nice buck. Was that in the U.P or down your way? People think they shoot 150lb spikes etc....that when weighed are more like 98lbs. But your buck looks like a small heifer laying there.

Good on ya.

Lar.

Jim you're the freakin' man for real. You're gonna have venison coming out your ears my brother! Dang! What a pig (the buck, I mean :) )

That is a great buck Jim and to get him with the 45-70, now that is just cool! Isn't it amazing what those animals can do!! I don't think Fotis will come along and tell you that you were undergunned or anything on this one!! That is unless he trumps your 45-70 with his 460 Weatherby!
Nice job Jim.
David

Thanks fellas.

Long,
The head waters of the Cut River. Lots of swamp and beaver ponds.

Yote,
Not sure what happened to him but I am thinking that as he stumbled through the blow downs, he tore the skin on his left hind leg. Its not a bullet would and it doesn't go into the meat, just a flesh wound. Its pretty thick and dirty with a lot of fallen trees and holes. Here is my shooting lane where I shot the buck. Its 75 yds from my blind to the cedars.

You guys know I am a bolt gun nut but man, I just love that little 1895 and the mighty 45-70 is a real hammer. I am pushing the 300 gr BST along at a MV of 2050 fps. Even at this speed, the internal trauma was impressive.

Scotty - Hmmm............ There is a stainless/black laminate one with the tactical rail on sale at the shop I frequent. It's only two miles away....... and it would greatly enhance my bore diameter avg of my safe!

Quick! Don't let that one slip away, as some of us have done.
