MidwayUsa Speer 35 cal 250 GS at half price

I have been eyeballing them a little myself. I tell you though, for the money, it is really hard to go wrong with the Speer 250gr Hot Cor. That bullet is tough and really accurate in my Whelen and about the same price as the GS on sale! They are a bargain really. Plus, they shoot identical to the 250gr PT's and have the same BC, so they are a great alternative bullet.

I wonder if the 250gr GS is being discontinued? Might be why they have such a sale on them? Scotty

They have been discontinued for a few years now maybe Midway found some boxes stored away somewhere while checking inventory. The regular 250 is good but the GS was much tougher since you have a good Partition load to go with your Speer's it probably wouldn't make sense for you to look at them.

The newer GS used the same old style jacket, thicker lower shank and cannelure to get a grip on the core, but did not have the two part core where the lower 1/3 was much harder than the tip. They just incorporated the Hot-Cor process and called it the same.

The old ones were good but costly to make. The new ones behaved just like the Hot-Cor so why have two of the same.

...have to disagree. The new GS use a single core material, but it's a different alloy than the HotCors, & show better accuracy & weight retention than the original dual cores. I've been using 'em for 35yrs., over 30 elk, 17 black bear, & mor'n a few deer, @ ranges from 40' to 500yds, never a failure to perform, the jacket design is the GS big strenght...

I didn't realize the core was a different alloy. The Speer rep just told me they had started to use the HotCor process. I still have the old style and have been very happy with them.

Maybe I'll buy some of theses closeouts and compare with the old.

Sorry CC, didn't mean to come off sounding "righteous"...

...I grew up in N. ID, the original "Good Ol' Boys" used to pack up anything that was laying around (& anything they could pilfer from RCBS) & make the circuit of LGS right before hunting season every year. I was on leave for elk season & one of the guys gave me 2 boxes of 175gr. Nitrex/GrandSlams to "try out", been shooting 'em in the 7mm w/ great results ever since. I questioned back when they changed, & they just said they made 'em better...

No worries. Its ok to disagree. About the only thing I'm sure of is that I don't know much.

Heck, I was about to write the GS off since Speer, in my eyes, seemed to de-value their importance. I'm going to retain my respect for them now if that core is tougher than the HotCor. It does make sense that a uniform core will make it more accurate and consistent. I do agree about their jacket being the key to their success. I used them in all my rifles and rifles I loaded for until the NAB won me over.

I think the Deep Curl is their focus now for their premier bullet. The TBBC is still relevant but again they're expensive and complex to make.
