After several COLD days of calling W of Orr I got some to come in. Was working a narrow point on a frozen lake that was used heavily as a crossing for deer and wolves. Had a clear field of fire 300+ yards over the ice and behind me in a fresh clearcut with a relatively cozy hide between two boulders. Naturally they came in the wrong way. Rather than approaching from downwind as I expected, 4 came in straight towards the call on a dead run from the clearcut. No shot opportunity then, moving too fast through cover. They then disappeared in a narrow slit of defilade tight the lakeshore and circled to my downwind side. They reappeared 600+ yards down the lake getting out of dodge. Very exciting, was a lot of fun to get some to respond to a fawn bleat and coyote yip combo with ravens. (They were real ravens attracted by a loaf of day old bread from the gas station). No tag filled for me this year though.

Still an awesome hunt. Best of luck next time you get the chance to hunt them.
I am hoping this next year MI will open a season and I can pull a tag.

It is always exhilarating to have this big canines rush in to a call. They can assuredly surprise you.

That's awesome that you were able too call one in! You'll get em next time

No doubt man. Great effort! Reminds me of Enemy at the gates.

It is unfortunate that you didn't connect :( but it must have been very exciting to have that kind of action :)
Hopefully you will get another crack at them next year

Blessings,
Dan

Felt like enemy at the gates minus the artillery and machine gun fire. Sunrise temp was -24F the last morning. Was even using a mosin nagant sniper rifle as I've done the most long range shooting with that one and it works no matter how cold it is. A 174 gr SMK might not have been too pretty after impact though.

Tried the raven trick the last day only based on advice from a local old-timer. Wish I'd done it sooner. I knew they were in the vicinity the whole time as I went out at night by snowmobile and got them to howl. About 1 hour after the ravens started squabbling they came in.
