Got the .300 WSM Model 70 out in the field for the first time a few days ago. Sure is a nice rifle. Tad heavy for backpacking. I like it though! No deer yet. Phooey.

Nice rifle Guy! Is that a coyote model?? Sure would like to have one of them in a 7 WSM.

What are you shooting through that 300wsm??

Your deer season start already??

Mine dont start for another couple weeks, Oct 4th I believe...

Nice looking rifle Guy.
What glass and load are you using?

remingtonman - we've got a "high buck season" in September when the official "Wilderness Areas" are open to mule deer hunting. I was up in the high country for three days but struck out. Still, it was nice to get into the field.

Yes, it's the "Coyote" model - I bought it used last year, just before I trashed my shoulder. Barely had any trigger time with it last year, but have been shooting it a bit this year. It's set up with a Jewell trigger and a Badger 20 MOA scope base. Nice shooter with several different loads, including the Nosler 180 Solid Base bullets. I had a small mountain of them from that half-price sale a while back...

N550 and Berger 190's is proving to be a very accurate load at around 2900 fps depending on temp. The previous owner had worked up that load, and I've got to hand it to him, it shoots great! I've got more I want to try, but it seems to be able to shoot several different heavy bullet loads into 1/2 MOA out at 300 yards. I've just done some steel & rock plinking beyond that, not serious group shooting at 500 or 600 yards.

On the advice of Lefty315 I'd like to try some 200 gr Accubonds and Partitions...

Scope is a 1" tube 4.5-14x Vari-X III that I've owned for years. Had Leupold fit it with M1 knobs earlier this year for about $130 - and they're working out great! I haven't found anything I don't like about this rifle... Except it's a little heavy for backpacking. Maybe I'm just getting old & feeble?

Regards, Guy

Very nice Guy, I like what you did with it. All things considered, the extra weight might not be a bad trade off for the capabilities you have. My daughter says she things it is a keeper!

Very nice Guy, i looked at one like yours a few weeks back. I still like a heavy rifle , i just don't carry them as far as i used to.
Yes , age makes a BIG difference.

Thanks guys. I had been assembling all the parts and pieces for a specialized long-range hunting rifle and decided the thing was going to be too big and heavy for how I really hunt. Sold all the components I had on hand, and found this rifle used - it's pretty much exactly what I wanted - just a way to extend my accurate shooting range to handle the occasional longish shot at a mulie...

Accuracy is good now, and when the factory barrel goes south, I'll replace it with something like a Krieger barrel. Am starting to really like the cartridge though, and will likely keep it a .300 WSM.

Regards, Guy

Guy,

Have you thought about a lighter stock? Maybe a synthetic?

JD338

Nope - the weight is fine with me for the intended purpose - I've got a couple of lighter rifles for most of my hunting! This one is nice & sturdy and hangs well on target for those longer shots. One of the reasons I bought it was for that laminated stock!
