There really does not appear to be many affordable options for this. The 700 is probably the most cusumizable bolt gun out there yet options for this are so limited

I have seen HS precisions 300 bucks
Wyatss 250+
and cabelas kwik klip about 90 bucks but only for long action

What gives am I missing anything?

When it comes to stuff like this you get what you pay for. You could get a cheap plastic kit and it might last a lifetime, or maybe it gets smashed the first season. In my case I never install any plastic crap on any of my guns. Though I do know what you mean. It probably cost $20 to make the part and they charge $220!

I have never been a fan of detachable magazines. If it were to get lost on the hunt, it would turn your rifle into a single shot.
I am thinking that the long action is the "standard".

Glen Seekins over in Lewiston, Idaho, builds one heck of a detachable mag system for the Remington 700. It's not inexpensive either, but is very good:

Or, if you don't need that big a magazine, just find a good used factory Rem 700 with the removable magazine - they've built about a zillion of 'em.
