Anybody here have experience with a rifle from Montana Rifle Company?

One of our local gunshops is starting to carry their rifles - and has two in stock. Very similar in appearance to a Winchester Model 70.

I've never shot one, only looked over one of the rifles in the store.

Thanks, Guy

I shot a lot of their actions in years past as RMR used the Montana action for quite some time. It is a solid action that functioned smoothly. I wouldn't be upset to own one of their rifles.

We had a 7 x 57 custom made for one of our daughters. she likes it and has had no problems with it. She liked it so well she sold her Weatherby

We have purchased three or four of their actions for custom builds and have had no problems. They have incorporated several of the features we like in an action. Very smooth ( and quiet ) controlled round feed action

After which you took her to the doctor to be checked for all manner of fever and delerium, right?

I can't imagine liking anything enough to sell one of my 'bees. Of course, I've only sold one rifle in my life - and then only because it was inherently flawed and wouldn't shoot better than minute-of-barn-door with any load tried. But being one of the local 'bee nuts around here, I had to take issue with your daughter's decision making here. I'm sure it was some sort of jungle fever from one of your exotic hunts that caused her to do this...

LMAO, good post.

We have a friend that doesnt understand the need for anything other than a 257 and 340. He tells everyone that will listen that there is nothing he cant hunt with those two calibers. And we still have a couple of Weatherbys around someplace, so we certainly are unable to argue with you. They make fine rifles. The rifle in question was a 7mm made in the 1950 s ( before Remington came out with theirs ) .

But she wanted a gun that "fit her" and she always liked my 7/57, and we had already used the Montana actions in other builds, so that is what she convinced her dad she needed. A friend of ours always admired her old 7 mm so we gave it to him one christmas and he is still using it. It has a few battle scars but still gets the job done for him.

Purchased a Montana Professional hunter action, wow what an action,
a la pre-64, smooth and a big magazine 4.043", bought today a PH hunter
stock from them and order a Broughton .338 t9.3 30" long a la sendero.
This is going to be my long range rifle. .338Edge
Outstanding service from Montana Company, for sure nice to deal with them.
You should like their rifles much better than any factory rifle a la Kimber.

by the way that professional hunter action is designed
for very large bore calibers you can fit a .505G.

Their standard rifles are around $1,000 - and of course with fancy wood or other options they can go much higher.

From what I've seen, and what others say about them, the base model rifles seem like a good value for the money.

I've sure been eyeing them guy especially since they are doing a standard base line model that is a bit more affordable, and they make them in the 280 Remington!

Yeah, you need to be the guinea pig for a classy .280!

Thanks for the good info all.

Was having daydreams about three matching rifles - just scoped differently:

6mm Rem
.30-06
.375 H&H

Those three and a quality .22 rimfire, and go hunt the earth. The KISS principle, via MRC. It has a certain appeal. I could see a substitution of maybe a .257 Roberts or .25-06 instead of the 6mm Rem...

Despite the potential for strenuous objections from David, it is almost mandatory that you should opt for either of the 25 calibre cartridges rather than the 6mm. That set of cartridges will indeed cover the need for about the entire world.

I'd take a 243Win for the simplicity, and the availability of ammo and brass in relatively cheap and plentiful fashion, over a quarter bore or the 6mmRem. Among the four mentioned, you're really splitting hairs in terms of advantages or disadvantages anyway. But the 243Win is what I currently have, and thus it is the best among them, obviously.

I could do that, though I think I might go with a .280 over the '06 and a .338 WinMag or Whelen over the .375... or maybe not.

I was just looking around at their website http://montanarifleco.com/custom.rifles.html and they have an interesting lineup... on the production rifles, the design of the wood stocks leaves me cold... the lines are too Weatherbyesque (Weatherbys are fine, I just don't think the world needs a Weatherby copy... the originals are good enough). No 6mm offered, but a .260 Rem and .338 Federal is?

I kinda dig the XWR SS... I could see me picking up them in .260 and/or .280...

The DGR leaves me puzzled. The only real chambering that interests me is the .416 Rigby. Really, a .338 Lapua in a DGR? Does not compute! I'd love to see a .404 Jeffery or .425 Westley-Richards offered. I would think that maybe a .416 Remington or .458 Lott would sell well, but maybe they are looking to be a little different? Assuming a decent price, a .470 Capstick would probably have me prying the wallet open.

On the custom rifles, the Wilderness Supreme if friggin' gorgeous!

Pretty nice rifles

Dubyam---very funny post, good one.

BK I know a fellow who loves to collect those types of calibers. He has some nice doubles in some of those calibers. I would like to have a 470 capstick I have also always wanted a 450/400

I have looked them over quite alot. Was hoping Brian's would come through, but they took a little long to produce, so he manned up and bought a Model 70... Everyone comes to their senses eventually!

I was going to keep my $.02 to myself! Two of my big green machine brothers have thrown me under the bus  I had my heart set on the XWR 300 RUM after talking with Montana back in March. Everything that I wanted in a rifle for the Oct elk hunt. Placed the order in March and they said I would have the rifle 6-8 weeks. Great! They knew I had a deadline! 10 weeks later with no word from Montana, my dealer called and found out that it would be August at the earliest before the rifle was assemble. Needless to say the order was canned. I understand things take time but they knew I needed that rifle sooner than ealy September. Would I try another order? Probably not since I can get whatever I want built for just alittle more money.
