Moose Medicine

April: I know what you mean when you say the younger people can't relate to Woodstock and the early rock groups.
My wife and I have taken younger couples to dances where the bands played classic rock from the 60s and they couldn't get over how my wife and I could sing along and not miss a word.
As far as bullet brand use I have been one to buy what worked best for me that I could afford so I used a lot of Sierra and Hornady bullets since I shot a lot and only used the premium bullets for special hunts but found that the Hornady worked best on the Deer size game I hunted and really didn't need a premium bullet and would just load a heavier than normal bullet for when I felt it was needed.
If my wife had been so inclined to join me she would have had the best money could buy since I would have wanted to give her every edge I could to succeed.
Just to let you know she could shoot my ears off when I would take her out for target practice with my .22, she never wanted a rifle or pistol of here own, as a matter of fact there are lots of things sport wise that she does better than me, bowling and pitching horseshoes are just a few things.
Sorry to the OP for getting off subject.

A fellow male member asked me to change my avatar which as you can see I did. Being new to the forum I did not realize how many females are members (which is very cool) so please except my deepest apologies if it offended anyone in anyway.........that was not my intent but in hide site I can see that is was in bad taste!

Keep up the good work everyone I really enjoy this site

Thank you for your manly demeanor, huntnmachine. Very conscientious and greatly appreciated.

huntnmachine--I for one was not offended and I can guarantee you April and Jamel was not offended and If I had to guess I don't think Brooke would have been but she is young. To be honest the younger females on the forum, like Wyoming huntress, did cross my mind and I wondered if someone would say something to you. Speaking 100% for myself however, no harm, no foul, but I agree with Dr Mike in regards to your manly demeanor--well done.

Truck driver. I tease my grandfather all the time about the old music but to be honest a lot of it, I love. I have dog sledded a lot of miles listening to the Eagles. RIP Glen Fry

April, it changes province to province, territory to territory, tribe to tribe and court to court. there is a never-ending battle to hang onto the rights that were given us in the 1800's and we have already lost a lot of them. Hunting for substance is a huge bone of contention in Canada. We are a little better off in the Territories than those who live in the provinces however. Trapping for a living is becoming extinct. Anyway explaining how it all works would be like listening to Hillary explaining her use of a private server for her emails. You say WHAT ? lol

back to huntnmachine----it is not uncommon for threads to drift, but we did get a tad away from "moose medicine"--so lets clear this up once and for all. The BEST moose combination is the Winchester 71, 348 Caliber using a 250 grain Woodleigh bullet. ----although Hodgeman, Dr Mike, Scotty, Gerry, Gil, april and approx 15 others will disagree lol

I wouldn't disagree- the best moose medicine is the one that puts the moose down and your .348 does that!

Being the 300 win mag is the biggest I own and have seen "whatever it hits it destroys" I would be # 16 to disagree...........lol

Well, I've used my .270 WSM and .280 in recent years. In o instance did they kill the moose; the beast simply decided to hop in the back of the pickup and accompany me to the meat cutter when I invited him to join me for dinner. I guess the invitation to join me for a meal was more persuasive than I remember.

Cheyene: I was at a carnival this evening where they had live music and the band played and sang 60s-70s music and was listening to music from 3 Dog Night and several other Bands from that era in time. (y)

Joining late  but I see that no one has mentioned the (Hammer of Thor) in my 35 Whelen the 225gr. AccuBond over top of RL-15 is a very potent medicine .

Blessings,
Dan
PS. Gil, my wife & I had the privilege of dining with DrMike & his lovely wife last night (y). After our meal DrMike took us down into his room  & I had a look at a broken rifle as DrMike called it well it was a 6.5 something or other & he asked me if I could repair the action . I took a quick look at it & told him I would have to take it home to get a get a better look at it (y). I will try to get it back to you in the next while .

That's gonna' make it tough to get Gil and Susan out of the house later today. I did get most of the drool off after Noah looked at that backwards rifle, though.

Moose medicine , the best one is the rifle you have got in your hand when you have a tag.
I went on my first moose hunt with my Dad, and moms great uncle in 1990 I was 16. Dad had his 7mm RM and I borrowed Granpas 270 win . Robert ( GU) brought his 444.
At 16 I marvelled over that triple 4 . As luck would have it Dad and his 7 put down the only moose of the trip. Hand loads with 175 gr Seirra's .
Following that trip Dad got me my BDL in 7mmRM and between us and my brother in law we have taken several moose most with the 7's , the BIL uses an 06'.
I have never needed anything more , we did have to track that one cow but that was shot placement issue and since that experience I no longer go for the neck shots no matter what range.
More then caliber I want bullet construction that is consistent and reliable.
Partitions, Bonded core , or a mono style . With a predictable upset, and acceptable accuracy I have no worries when I head out on the trail of a moose.

Well there are several items to comment on in this thread now, and I will keep to the initial topic of this thread in the first response:

Everyone will have a slightly different opinion as to the "best moose medicine", and hodgeman is correct... With a slight addition... "It is the rifle in your hand that puts the moose in the freezer!". May we all continue to have fun debating the merits of one vs another!

Europe, to add a note to DrMike's observation regarding the men that load premium bullets for their female hunting counterparts or partners, I would add that just as every man wants to brag about their own prowess, factual or fictitious, every man wants to be able to brag even more about their wife's or daughters (etc.) actual prowess and harvesting game with a single, well placed shot!

Also, while DrMike refers to my Status Card (First Nation's Identification of belonging to a Band or Tribe that is signatory to one of our Treaties here in Canada) as my "Red Card", it is not actually so. Partly my fault as I have joked for 30 years of it being my "North American Express Card" since membership has it's privileges, and I don't leave home without it! LOL

In harvesting fish and game under our Treaty Rights, we are only allowed to share the gathered fish and game for sustenance and ceremonial purposes with other members of First Nations with Treaty Rights. As Mike stated, I cannot give or share my harvests with him or any other non-Status individual. Although they are welcome to share a meal with me in my own home!

In Canada, there are 642 First Nations, of which 246 are in BC. Not all peoples of Aboriginal ancestry in Canada belong to a Status First Nations community with Treaty Rights and title.

Thanks DrMike for the accolades. I did win Silver at the Canadian 3D Outdoor Archery Championships in Windsor, Ontario over the long weekend, and have been named to Team Canada for the 2017 World Championships in Robion, France. I will be competing in the Barebow Division with my Recurve. I am looking forward to representing my Country, Province and Nation next year!

Gil, congratulations and good luck!!!!

I have been asked about the the 642 Gil speaks of in his above post. Gil is speaking of tribes. There are approx 1.5 million Aboriginal people in Canada which include First Nation, Metis, Inuit and mixed. Nunavut does not have a tribe as they have their own Inuit controlled govt and the populace is 85% Inuit ( or higher ).

Dr Mike, Gil, Dan--this meal you speak of that you enjoyed at Dr Mike's---was it moose meat ? lol

Gil and I have shared moose, elk, whitetail, mule deer, thinhorn sheep, caribou, grouse and perhaps one or two other meats as the centre of the meal.

It was beautiful T-bone beef steak (y). Great meal & even better fellowship !

Blessings,
Dan

My son drew an either sex Moose Tag for Vermont this year and he will be using 165 gr. AccuBond ahead of 60.5 gr. H205 powder at 3100 fps out of a 30-06 Sako Finnbear , he will also have his 44 mag 9 1/2" Ruger SRH with cast 305 gr FNGC. It will depend on the circumstances as to what he will shoot with.
