Photo from our local newspaper. Apparently someone's camera recorded these two cats a few days ago. Very cool. This area is close to town, and an area I frequently hike or cycle. Love it!

I've been fortunate enough to see a few, very few, cougars while out in the hills. Never have I seen two at a time!

In all my years trekking about BC, I've seen a total of four lions in the wild. It is always fascinating when you encounter them. A friend in Valemount filmed a family of four sauntering down a logging road. Great pictures. And these from down in WA are excellent. I don't want all the lions to disappear; they are a part of the wild here in NA. Definitely a cool picture, Guy.

Guy that is a great photo. Approximately 30 years ago I was sitting on the west side of a cut with my bear bait on the east side of the cut. I heard some coming in behind very quietly a cougar (Mountain Lion) walked in under my stand crossing the cut sniffed the bait barrel a few times & walked back into the bush.
Only one I have ever seen in the wild.

Blessings,
Dan

Oh yes! Long season, cheap tag.

The only drawback is that 20 years ago our ability to use dogs to hunt them was curtailed - so now it's a "spot & stalk" deal only... Or predator calls... And these rascals are hard to hunt afoot! I've done it off and on over the years, but always without success.

My usual tactic was to wait until after the last deer season was over, and the mule deer were moving lower for the winter, then go out, sometimes on snowshoes, and take a big walk around an area holding deer, looking for cat tracks in the snow. Found them a few times, never managed to walk down a cat though. Not yet.

I know one fellow here in town who was chukar hunting with his shotgun. Came across cougar tracks, followed them, and ended up blasting the cat with his shotgun! Big cat too, and he got it fair & square.

We have LOTS of them here Scotty, the Fish and Wildlife folks are making it as easy as they can on hunters to take them, but there's that danged 20 year old law against using hounds... Of course F&W uses dogs to hunt problem cougars...

We've actually had quite a few instances where cougars have come into town and eaten peoples big bad guard dogs, no problem. Apparently the cats kind of like fresh dog... And I know of one fellow who was attacked by a young cougar in Leavenworth Washington, only to have his little wirehaired fox terrier run that cat right back into the woods!

very cool Guy

Scotty, my husband and I hunted them in Arizona and Old Mexico with hounds and enjoyed the hunts. However they are very physically demanding and I obviously could not keep up now, but you could. The hunts are still available and fairly reasonable. Fun hunt, but physically demanding. How cool would it be to have the hide on your wall or floor Scotty ? You should check it out

Who did your dad hunt with in B.C.

Interestingly enough, a young mountain lion crossed in front of us this evening (an old county blacktop road along the river) as we were driving on our way home. Beautiful animal that hasn't quite grown to match the size of his tail yet. It's the second one I've seen in the past couple years (this one about 2 miles from home and the other about 4 miles). Neither time did they stick around long enough to get a picture, but they are pretty cool to see.

I've yet to see one not chased by dogs.
You are very fortunate maverick2.

Two different outfitters I believe. I'll ask and get back to you.

Thanks for posting Guy. We have a few of these magnificent animals here on the east coast but mostly in the Allegany and Blue Ridge mountains but every now and then they will come down to the flat land.
I was working for Potomac Power Co. and we had a female with a pair of cubs visit one of our power stations. We saw lots of tracks and had them confirmed by a state biologist, we also found deer kills and heard her calling at night. I was working physical security at the station and was on night patrol when I came back to the office trailer she was standing out side the door of the trailer, I had a clear view of her in the truck head lights. I called my partner on the radio and told him not to go out side that the cat was standing outside the door, he thought I was kidding him until he looked out the window and saw her. She could make the hair stand up on your neck when she squalled. She was the only one I've ever seen outside of a zoo. She hung around for about 2 weeks and just disappeared just like she came with her cubs. My partner and I are the only ones who ever saw her. We were issued .38 revolvers but I got permission to carry a 12ga with buck shot when on patrol until she left.

Thanks I would be interested who he was with and how his experience was.

Just finished my last package of cougar steaks a few days ago. They are very hunt able with out dogs if you take the time to learn their habits. They make great Chile and Tacos along with steak stir fry

Nothing like sitting on a point, glassing for elk. Get that primitive sensation something is wrong. Walk back up the ridge 20 yards or so to the next big tree. Cat tracks in your boot tracks.
The desire to drop your drawers and complete the morning routine, vanished.
