I spent all of last week elk hunting to return to civilization with my internet not working until recently and lots of cleaning and puting stuff away in the meantime. So now for the report... My girlfriend, I, and two really good friends headed for the hills Friday the 15th and we set up camp. Opening day began Saturday and although we saw deer, we didn't see any elk until Monday evening, when right before dark, my friend Josh shot a big bull which we ended up tracking until 3 am! The shot was taken at 260 yards. The bullet went in the right side and out the left front leg, so I'm guessing it must have went through the lungs/liver possibly. We tracked and tracked and tracked. The blood was red but very little and in some places we could see the drag mark in the dirt from the offside leg that was busted. The reason we kept on the tracks was it was forecasted to rain in the morning, but at 3 am, we slept in the trucks until daylight at which time we resumed tracking where we left off and made it a little further (all in all 1.5 miles by GPS). Then the rain came and we lost any sign of the animal.

On Wednesday evening, Josh spotted a herd of 50 elk and made a good clean kill on a 5x5 bull. The shot was made at 324 yards by range finder with his 30-06 Interarms rifle which I had handloaded with 180 grain Accubonds. One shot and the bull dropped less than 10 feet from where it stood. Success! We then quartered and packed it up the mountain from dark until 2:30 am and again slept in the truck as we were about an hour from camp and it was in the 20's and frost was on our packs even at the time we did the cutting on the elk earlier in the night.

I didn't personally shoot anything nor did my girlfriend or other friend, but we all consider it a successful and good hunt as two bulls were hit although unfortunately one was found. The meat is already finished at the processor, which makes a good finish to our hunt all around.

You guys had a rough hunt! Shame about losing one animal, it happens time to time.

Congrats on getting one bull, seems the shooter, rifle and bullet all worked really well on that one!

Yes Guy, I guess I should have mentioned that the bull that dropped was hit right behind the left shoulder and the AccuBond hit lung and clipped the heart before it exited through a rib bone out the hide on the right side. So even though the bullet didnt knock down the first one, I still have to believe it is a good bullet because it also penetrated one side and exited and broke the off-side leg. I fully believe the bullet did it's job, although maye expansion was somewhat of an issue as it was aparent the elk bled internally and just not a lot sprayed out. I have never tracked an animal for 1.5 miles in my life and the fact that we could follow it for that far, I'm convinced that the elk died somewhere and we just were not able to track it any further due to the rain washing the blood and tracks away. A day later, we found an elk head in the dumpster at the bottom of the mountain that had it's antlers and ivories cut out, as I'm sure someone found it bloated and ruined and that was all they could salvage. Too bad! I'm really glad that my buddy was able to connect with another the next evening which required no tracking, just a lot of work getting it out.

Yote,

Glad you had a good hunt. Sorry to hear you lost the first bull.

Me too man. Losing one really sux!

Be happy you got to shoot one. I just got back and did not see one elk this year. I'm still looking to shoot one, never done that either.

Yote,
Thanks for the story! You did all that you could for the 1st bull, and sometimes, the animal just cannot be found. I wish that we could track with dogs sometimes, but that raises all kinds of other concerns. Cannot do that in Texas or Ca to my knowledge.

Congrats!

Hey Yote, congrats on your Elk hunt. Was wondering if you had pictures
I sure would like to see that Elk and the scenery.
I am sorry you lost the one bull but sometimes things do not work out.
You gave it a good try though and that is all any of us can do.

Blessings,
Dan
