My youngest son and I grabbed some breakfast and headed to the range, with the intent of shooting the 300 yard gong a few times, then getting the heck out of there before it got too hot. Here's a few photos:

He started with his 6mm Remington, with a good 3,000 fps hunting load, slamming little 100 gr Nosler Partitions into the gong. It's got a nice 3.5-10x Leupold, and gets used for varmints, coyotes and deer. Rifle was new in 1974.

Moved up to the ancient M-1917 .30-06, and scored a first round hit at 300, with a 165 Nosler at 2750 fps. We like the ol' warhorse. It sits in a B&C stock, crisp Timney trigger, free floated barrel, and has a 6x Leupold with a dot & tapered crosshairs:

The gong is off to the left of the bare looking area.

And of course, I cheated big time, and used the .308 Green Machine, prone, sitting and standing.

Good breakfast, good shooting. I think the young man might use the .30-06 for bear in a month. He's shooting it better this year. The Weatherby-Mauser is in the shop, getting a new recoil pad, trigger & safety. We might not have it back in time for our bear hunt in a month but he's doing just fine with the .30-06, that should be a fine choice anyway.

Guy,

Looks like a fun day with your son!

I know what you mean about beating the heat, I didi the same as you this morning.

Now, that's what I'm talking about! Some great fun and a wonderful opportunity to spend some quality time with the people you love. Great pictures that make all of us old duffers pine for the days when our children were still at home.

Great shooting

I would be interested in more info on your M-1917 specs and build. I am looking to do something with mine. Shoot me a PM, thanks.

Guy -

Nicely done ! Sounds like a phenominal morning.

If you ever feel the need to pass the 6mm along, I know a nice little place here in CO

The M-1917 is pretty simple:

Original .30-06 military barrel, cut and crowned at 21"

Glass bedded into a Bell & Carlson fiberglass stock - retaining the 6-round magazine.

Weaver scope bases & rings - not pretty, but tough.

Fixed 6x Leupold, 36mm obj lens, with the "Leupold dot" reticle (not mil-dots)

Timney trigger, set at about 3.5 pounds

Cock on opening conversion - don't recall the maker - not sure I'd do that again, I didn't really mind the original cock-on-closing feature.

Heavier Wolf firing pin spring from Brownells - I'd have to look up the weight.

Add 58 gr of H4350 and some 165 Noslers and she shoots real good. This is the first center-fire rifle I ever shot, back in 1966 when I was only 10 years old. Still have it, still shoot it and hunt with it. Good old piece of gear, but nothing fancy. I'd kind of like to get another one, and build it as a .375 H&H... The big action is more than strong enough.

Powerstroke, that little 6mm was my high-school graduation gift from Dad back in 1974. Love it.

Passed it on to my son when he turned 13. He thinks the world of it. Everything he shoots with it just crumples! Or in the case of rock-chucks, sometimes launches into the air...

Awesome day at the range with your boy! Man, that really made me miss being out there with my son. I like that big 30-06! Looks like a whopper of a rifle. Scotty

What a great day at the range! Sounds like you guys had some fun. I have to get some rounds loaded up so me and my boy can get out there soon too! My son Jeff has a 6mm Remington as well and he loves it. He's taken two antelope and a mule deer buck so far with it. The 6mm is one great cartridge :!:

Makes my heart feel good to see men spend time with their boys. That is how relationships are made and the bond will never be broken.
It is a lot better than seeing our kids in front of the TV playing those electronic games.
Keep up the good work and good luck with the bear hunt :) :)

Blessings
