I am looking to other coyote hunters for 22-250 load data that will minimize pelt damage.

What rifle and barrel twist do you have?

I shoot a 55 gr BT with 35.0 grs RL 15 for .5 MOA. Exits on coyotes are the size of a nickel if you stay off the shoulder.
Rifle is a M700 VLS 22-250 with a 1:14 twist.

If you have a faster twist, like a 1:12 or 1:10, look at the 60 gr BT and the 60 gr PT. Both are awesome coyotes bullets but you will need a twist faster than the common 1:14.

I have been using the Nosler Custom Comp 52 gr hollow point for all my 22-250 shooting. Only one yote has been a victom so far, but the hollow point went in one side, and didn't exit. Dropped him in his tracks. 39.2 gr of RL15. I'm shooting the CZ 550 Varmint with kevlar stock. Excellet grouping and very consistant.

I've had good luck with Speer 52gr HP over Varget at 3550fps with only one bad exit wound. High rib cage shots are 70% no exits/30% exit and average exit hole is <1".

I've used 55gr VMAX and most did not exit but the few that did were ugly.

I'm working up a load of 53gr TSX to see what they will do. I'm hoping for small exit wounds on Yotes but also a back-up deer round.

Not sure why but I've never tried BTs in this gun. Will have to give them a workout just because.

That 52gr Speer is a great bullet and so accurate its scary in every single 22-250 I have ever put it through. Scotty

I've sent a boat load of Prairie Dogs to the big dog town in the sky with the 52gr. Speer Flat Base Hollow Point in both .223's and .22-250's over the years but never did shoot a Coyote with that bullet.

What primer are you using JD338? CCI 250 Magnum or Large Rifle?

Do you fully resize your cases?

I use a CCi BR2 primer and do a partial full length resizing and bump shoulders after 3-4 loadings.

Hi JD

Thanks for the reply. How do you do a partial resizing? Do you just bring resize until the primer is knocked out?

I have backed off the resizing die about .060" (approx. 1/16") from the shell holder.
This gives the neck enough tension to hold the bullet but doesn't over work the brass. This prolongs case life and helps reduce case streatching which leads to case trimming.

Set your sizing die so that it just touches the shell holder. Size your case and test it to see if the bold closes. You want the bolt to just close without significant resistance. After about two or three firings, it will be necessary to set the shoulder back a couple of thousandths of an inch. You follow a similar procedure, turning the die down just slightly until the sized case permits you to close the bolt without significant resistance. It helps to visualise the sizing to dip the neck in a dry lube such as motor mica to see the datum line after sizing.
