Needing a new rifle

Remintonman2506 there really isnt a difference in the 7mm-08 and the 260. acually from some research ive done its only 100 fps slower with the same 140 grain bullet and only drops a half inch more at 300 yards and with a fair amount less of felt recoil. really isnt a difference between the 2. and some of you guys suggest the 6.5x55 as a choice and the 260 is a ballistic twin to it. but then again there arnt many gun makers that make a cheaper fun gun in the 260.

the 260 i am looking at is the Remington 700 CDL SF Limited Editon.

The CDL is a fine rifle, and it is certainly most handsome. Remington did a good job on it. The 260 is certainly not overly popular, but it is a good cartridge that will do precisely what you are looking for.

I worked up a load for one that a gentleman purchased for hunting capercaillie in Norway. It shot excellent groups with Norma FMJ 120 grain bullets and with Entox 105 grain bullets (Full Metal Jacket bullets were required to hunt these birds in Norway). It was pretty impressive. The calibre certainly proved its worth.

Depending on what you find in the used racks, an old mauser design action in 7x57 is a classic capable of taking any of the game you mentioned. It's really a triplet to the 7mm-08 and the 260Rem, though, so it's probably cheaper to get one of them.

As for the Stevens, remember that it can be easily rebarreled at home (with proper instruction) and is thus a virtual switch barrel gun. Get one in anything from the 308Win family (243, 7-08, etc) and you can rebarrel it to anything else in that family, including the 260Rem, 338Fed, 358Win, and any of a number of wildcats out there. Not terribly expensive to do, either.

If you have it narrowed down to a 270 WSM or a 260 I would go with the 270 WSM. It does have more recoil when loaded to its full potential, but when loaded down it doesn't seem to kick much more than the warm loads I have worked up for my wifes 7mm-08 (which is a pretty light rifle). There are some pretty good looking ones out there as well. Remington, Savage, Winchester, and Kimber all have the 270 WSM. I think it gives you a bit better bullet selection than a 260, and the ability to load hotter if you should choose.

nitis is right though I'm afraid to hunt with mine to much because my 338 WM and my 375 Ruger look at me funny when I have to leave them in the safe. The 270 WSM is a pretty dang usefull round.

270 wsm is really good I cant wait to try some of the 110 gr accubonds in it. The best part of my 270 wsm is I got it new a 700 lss for 450 bucks! I should have bought 2 or 3.

So i decided to pass my interarms mark x 25-06 to my lil bro and now im wondering on what rifle to get. Ive been thinking of a .260 or a 264 win mag. The kind of hunting i will be doin is on antalope, deer, maybe an elk if i ever draw for one around here in ND. i need somting that will buck the wind yet not knock my arm off. if anyone has any other suggestions for diff calibers im open to them all i have saved up about 1100 for this new investment. I love odd calibers for some reason just somthing that not to many of the common hunter has. any input would be great.
...................For the antelopes, deer and an occasional elk, I`d lean to the 270 WSM. It`s a darn good long range flat shooter, won`t knock your arm off and it`s available in an array of rifle choices including the light weights. It`s not an odd cartridge, but it will more than get the job done...It approaches the 270 Wby Mk V in performance without paying as much in price.

Second choice? 7mm Rem mag?

I dont' have any experience with the .270's.... it's on my " list " however. I " NEED " one.. to fill the numerical gap between my .260 and .280

I actually have a 7-08 as well.... both the .260 and 7-08 in Rem 700 varmiters. It doesn't matter what I'm hunting around here to include Elk, I'll take the .260 first choice every time now. Definetly less felt recoil and the BC on the 6.5's is nothing short of phenominal.

I haven't payed attention much the last few months, but Nosler is to be releasing a 140gr A-bond for the 6.5's shortly........

280, 280, 280
Wider selection of bullets and no chambering issues of the wsm's.
Also 4+1 instesd of 3+1 capacity.
You could AI it and load it up to 7mag performance if you wish. (elk hunting) or load the 140 ab or bt to 3150fps with minimal recoil for deer and antelope.
The 7mm bullets have great BC's

I would however like to have a 260 in the family and the Rem 700 ltd SF would look real nice in the gun room.

well guys i went ahead and got the .260 in a cdl i loved the ballistics of it and it history of long rang shooting and the bc is amazing for the 6.5 cal bullet and its also a pretty gun. ill post some pics somtime when iget my scope in

Congratulations on your M700 CDL in 260 Rem. That is one mighty fine looking rifle and I'm sure it will be a shooter for you. The 260 Rem is a pretty amazing round and the ballistics are impressive.

The 120 gr BT, 125 gr PT and 130 gr AB should get you where you want to be. What scope are you getting for your new rifle?

The CDL is one of the prettiest rifles Remington has made. Congratulations. As I previously posted, the 260 will work just fine for the purposes you propose.

If I'm not mistaken, Big Green no longer offers the .260 in anything other than an M7. Wish I would have bought a rifle like yours. I'm not a huge fan of carbine length barrels, and at 6'6" and 300+ lbs., short barrels make the rifle seem like a toy to me.

well friends i am dropping a sightron 4.5x14-50 big sky II on it i figure im gonna be taking some longer shots with the gun so ill let you guys know how every thing works out. they gave me some bad news though cuz the rarity of the gun its gonna take somthing like a month to come in so ill post up some pics around then..... thanx for all the help

Well I am happy for you and your knew gun, I KNOW WHAT THAT IS LIKE!!!   , I am having to wait on a 30-06. Just a little caution with the 260 on game. At the velocities of the 260, if you use tough bullets, don't expect a lot of expansion at distance and with some you won't get good expansion up close. I had a 260 and with the Swift Scirocco II, and once with a TBBC I did not have good expansion with these on deer with the 260.

Now once I went to the Nosler BT on deer we were back in business and deer did not go far. I used it for only one season so my experience is very limited but that is what happened with me and my 260. If you are going to take long shots on game you might want to consider the BT for use in the 260.

I can't wait to see pictures of your rifle and scope. Hope all works out like you want it to.
