I just took delivery of a Weatherby Vanguard (Wilderness model) in 240 WBY. It's the third Weatherby cartridge cartridge for me and the 6th Weatherby rifle and the 5th Vanguard.

I'm looking to start out loading with MRP and IMR 7828. I have those on hand and need to base-line the rifle as well as get some fired cases to check for actual case capacity to plug into QL.

Looking at starting both MRP and IMR 7828 at 53.grs with 95 gr. B-Tips. Seem reasonable?

Anyone tried IMR 7977 in the 240 WBY?

I used R19 behind the older Barnes 90X back in the 90's. Not sure MRP and such but "may" be a tad too slow for the 95gr. Worth trying. anyhow, its a fine cartridge, good luck to you Pard.

I believe and have read that MRP is similar or the same as R22... That said I shoot 53 grs of R22 with both a 100 gr GK and 95 gr BT. It is a full pressure load in my Vanguard but shoots very well after finding the sweet spot on OAL. I did start around 51 grs when working up.

I would think MRP and 7828 should both work similar and very well!
Keep us posted on your findings and good luck.

I saw several mentions of RL-22 in articles about the 240 so figured MRP should be close.
Results from this morning's range session... Fired 3 rounds each over the Magnetospeed bayonet.
95 gr B-Tip 52.0 grains Ave(3) 3109 fps Std Dev 2 QL predicted 3234
100 gr Part 51.0 grains Ave(3) 2973 fps Std Dev 26 QL predicted 3120
So I am about 150 to 130 fps low of prediction. I was using standard LR primers.
Fired another 3 each with the chronograph removed...
95 gr went first 2 into single oblong hole third shot was 1/2 " away from those.
100 gr. about a 1" horizontal string...

Now that I have fired cases I can determine actual case capacity to load into QuickLoad...
Stay tuned...

Maybe this will help?

Thanks but I'm running quick load already.

Just finished measuring and averaging case H2O capacity now that I have fired cases. It averages 64.98 over 5 cases. Nearly a full grain over SAAMI spec. Which I suspected.
When I re-calculated I got velocity predictions very close to what I choreographed. I did change the Weighting Factor from .33 to .5 as well even though this is supposed to be an over-bore caliber. I may change that back after I up the charge weights. Right now the pressures are very mild.

Whoops, sorry!
I'll be really interested in how it does over the chrono. (I'm going to compare what you get to my 6-284  )

This is my 6-284 load(105 AMax)
+00.0 92 53.00 3328 2582 63651 12080 100.0 1.217 ! Near Maximum

edit: Sorry the powder on this is RL26

As a reference... My load of 53 grs of R22 with GM210 gives 3250 fps with 100 gr GK at 3.160 OAL. Any more powder and groups opened up and velocity increases were minimal.

Latest range results using IMR7828...
95gr B-Tip 53.0grs IMR7828 Ave(3) 3282 fps Es 65 Stdev 35 65 Degrees
100gr Partition 54.0grs IMR7828 Ave(3) 3145 fps Es49 STdev 25
86gr F-Tip 54.0grs IMR7828 Ave(3) 3286 Es52 Stdev 26
All the loads are running 100-150 fps under Quickload predictions even after I updated the actual case capacities. I've been using CCI 200 primers. Seeing the large deviations I am suspecting that moving to a Magnum primer might improve velocities and lower variations. I am also noticing some smoke left over in the barrel and chamber. Although it doesn't seem like you would need a Magnum primer to light-off powder charges less than 60 grains.

More to come...

My 54gr of R19 behind the 90X in two rifles ( both had 24" barrels) got right at 3500fps. Sure, they were "warm" but this is not a "plinking round" anyhow. Remember, Weatherby ( if you can get them to admit it) load their factory ammo around 72K! One and done is their Marketing philosophy! I don't remember my church member's recipe, but he has been shooting the Nosler 95gr Partition (Mark V) for over 25yrs on everything out here! Mule deer up close to over 450yds, elk from up close to over 300yds. Its a good one!

Nice! I've always been intrigued by that little Weatherby.

Have been shooting and loading for the smaller 6mm Remington since 1974, and I love the performance from the 6's. That 95 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip is the single most accurate bullet I've ever used in the 6mm, and turns out, at 3,000 fps it's a great deer bullet as well for mule deer or whitetail.

Enjoy!

Guy

I ran a test of the same loads using CCI 250 magnum primers. The results were not statistically different than the sames loads using CCI 200 standard primers.

So, it was time to add more coal to the boiler. Latest range report all loads using IMR7828...
100gr Partition 54.0grs Ave(3) 3225 E19 S10 43 Degs
90gr AccuBond 54.5grs Ave(3) 3364 ES25 S13 43 Degs
86gr F-Tip 55.0grs Ave(3) 3391 E60 S30 43 Degs
Quickload predictions are pretty close on these loads but only if I set the weighting factor to 0.5 rather than 0.33 that is typical for "Overbore" cartridges.
More to follow...

That's amazing. I dig that little 240 Wby.. Got a couple things on my plate but a quick 6mm is in the hole.

You guys are all running 24" barrels?

Yes. The Vanguards are all 24" barreled. I think most of the Mark V 240 WBY are 24" as well...

Results from this morning's range trip...

It's coming in the 90gr AccuBond load is looking nice. I'm fine with the velocity it's packing over 1000 ft/lbs at 400 yards.

Next up... 85 grain partitions and I have a box of 90 grain Swift Scirocco bullets I just recieved to try. The Scirocco in .257 100 grain is my go-to bullet for the 257 WBY... More to come...
