I am looking at getting a new 270 WSM for deer hunting, i have looked at Browning X-bolt, Winchester M70 Featherweight and M70 Ultimate Shadow, as well as a Savage Weather Warrior 16FCSS, of those which is the best rifle, or if there is any other that you can think of for under $900.00 let me know. Thanks

I really like the Winchester Model 70 Featherweight or the classic Sporter. Really like both!

The Tikka T3 is a very nice rifle also chambered in 270 WSM in a variety of models.

Tough choices!
David

If you want guaranteed accuracy go Tikka T-3 or Savage. Money in the bank!

I love this version of the Savage

Of those choices, I would go Ultimate Shadow, particularly if you can find an SS version. Just a personal hangup, but I don't like Magnums (including, obviously, Short Mags) in a Featherweight.

I don't really like Savage rifles all that much, though I am a little interested in a Savage in .338 Lapua or 6.5x284. I haven't quite been able to convince myself I want a Tikka yet, though they do have a sterling reputation for accuracy.

My personal choice would be a Kimber Montana, but that kinda shreds your budget.

I have so many WSM rifles from several sources....

Of the ones you mentioned, I would go with.....

Get a Winchester Extreme Weather. You will love the stock, fluted ss bbl..and of coure the weight and balance...adjustable trigger

people will say you can't get one in the budget you mention but I beg to differ. If you look hard enough you will be able to find one in that price cap!

If you can't I bet I can round one up for you!

I've been through several WSM's since their introduction and still own 3 in 270WSM alone. I would start with the rifle that feels the best to you and has the best fit. Another thing to consider is the action length. If you feel that having a short action is a worthy advantage to having a short mag, then I would look away from the Tikka and Savage. Those actions are long compared to the Remington, Browning or Winchester. The position of the safety might be enough to eliminate some models. The X-bolts I have shoot very well, fit well, are nicely finished and have the safety where I like it, on the tang. They don't have many aftermarket options with stocks and so forth, if it matters at all. I'm not sold on the Winchester safety or extracter, both seem fragile to dinging or making contact with another object. I have two of the current BACO classic sporters, and they are of good quality, much better than the few New Haven models I ownded. The NH models had either bad chambers, broken extrators or poorly tapped base mounting screw holes. The Browning and the Winchesters, current models, will have the same trigger. The Savage has the Accutrigger, take it or leave it for me. Remingtons can be good, but have a long list of replacement options. Tikka has a very nice trigger that is consistent from rifle to rifle. So, you have some things to look at the next time you are browsing.

I'd just go start pointing and shouldering as many as you can. Keep in mind the clothing you would most likely wear while afield, and go from there. I like guns and don't allow myself to be denied satisfaction by letting a brand name control my decision making. Have fun shopping for a new WSM and let all of us know what you purchase. You'd better post a pic or two also.

I'll second what Mountain Goat said about handling and shouldering as many different guns on your list as possible before buying one. And, obviously, you'll want to handle/shoulder a WSM version. There are deals out there, too, so keep an eye peeled. How about a nearly new Winchester Extreme Weather for an asking price of $750:

Or a Featherweight for $599:

Or a Kimber Montana:

Or a Weatherby Vanguard in Synthetic for around $450-475, or a satin wood stocked sporter for around $625-650.

You have plenty of options for a 270WSM these days. Enjoy the search.

I would go with the Model 70 Winchester Classic but the Ultimate Shadow is nice also, ifyou want a synthetic stock. Both have CRF and the new trigger. I happen to like the Model 70 safety as well.

Have look at the Vanguard, they are not a bad price. The accuracy is supposedly excellent :)

Blessings,
Dan

I have a Browning X-Bolt Stainless Hunter (the walnut stock) and believe it is the best handling of any my bolt action rifles. It is very well ballanced and comes up to my shoulder naturally. It is also fairly light and easy to carry. I too enjoy the safety on the tang and the 30 degree bolt lift is a plus in my books. To top it all off it was a peach to find a load for  I really think most manufacturers today put together decent shooting rifles. Everyone has their own opinion and one man's trash is another man's treasure. Hope you settle for nothing less than what you want

I own a Winchester Model 70 Super Shadow Camo, which is no longer cataloged. I really like that rifle and it shoots well. That exact model is not available but the Ultimate Shadow SS is the same gun, but with a black stock. It lists for $969.99, but I imagine you can get one cheaper than that.

I understand the quality control on the new Winchesters is exellant and while I have not tried one, I hear the new trigger is pretty good.

My vote would be for the Winchester.

I am with Mr Flowers. The Featherweights are very nice rifles right out of the box. Haven't found any issues with developing loads for them. Pretty much, my whole pile of M70's is from the old NH factory and I haven't had to work too awfully hard to find loads for them. I have a 270WSM M70 Laminate and love it. Have the same exact rifle in a 7WSM as well. Another great rifle.

The 270WSM is an excellent cartridge though. The others gave you some great advice, shoulder a bunch of rifles and see what you like. I like the firing controls on the M70's the most, but use what is comfortable to you. Another thing is the Winchester's seem to have the longest mag box and do allow you some flexibility in seating depth arrangements. Pretty handy to have when you start working loads up.

My top 3 choices.

1. Winchester
2. Winchester
3. Winchester

If one of those aren't available go somewhere else.

I had Sako, Steyr, remington, browning sold them all after buying my first Winchester 70. Except for one model 700 mountain rifle in 260 mainly because of caliber.

Man, we must be running on the same track today!

...well, as much as I love Winchester Model 70's, I'm a pragmatist...

...I still prefer the A-Bolt over the X-Bolt, you should be able to find an A-Bolt Stainless or Composite Stalker NIB for under $900, no problem. Like the slightly tacky feel of the stocks, the 60* bolt throw, & w/ a 3.5X10 or 4.5X14 VX-3 you're still @ the starting weight of an EW or Featherweight...

...the stock on the Tikka T3 Lite doesn't "feel" as nice, but then they cost considerably less, weigh the same as the A-Bolt. not real hot on the poly mags, but have never had a problem w/ 'em, & the "single stack" is a definite "+" when feeding short, fat cartridges, since they're already aligned w/ the bore...

...both have very good, easy-to-adjust triggers, & all the Tikkas & A-Bolts I've managed to stumble into have been "Definite Shooters" capable of sub MOA accuracy...

I was down to the x bolt the super shadow and the extreme weather when I was looking to buy. I ended up picking the x bolt, but I have had a few feeding issues with it, seems to be working fine now though. If I could do it again I would have gone with the extreme weather first, but would be happy with a super shadow as well. I think the winchester action and safety is superior to the browning, the factory x bolt synthetic stock is nice though!
