New 338-06 Test Load

Those are great looking loads. I am amazed that a 30-06 size case can get those 200 and 210 grain bullets traveling that fast. What a super combination. It sounds like a heck of a big game cartridge.

Dan
Dan You should see what a35Whelen/AI will do with 200gr and 225gr bullets.
Well over 3000fps with 200s and around 2925fps with 225s.
Did Rol_P ever show you the 2 samples I sent home with him last year when he was passing threw my area?

Yes it's an interesting cartridge.Because it has a larger bore, you can use a little higher dose of faster burning powder than what you would use in the 30-06 with those big bullets.I was able to get 2818fps with 60.0grs of Winchester 760 with the 210gr Partitions and 3018fps with 58.0grs of Varget with a 180gr AccuBond, but the groups were around 1 1/4"-1 1/2" with those loads.Still not too bad,but I like my rifles to shoot under an inch consistently.Looks like the 4350 powders are the slow powders for this cartridge and the powders that work with the 308 Win are the ones that work well in this cartridge.
Try some CFE223 in it. That stuff is magic in my 35Whelen/AI

Wow, excellent all the way around. Great loads for about anything that walks, and great shooting. Well done.

TD, yes I have seen your mock-ups. Those are very impressive.

Dan; Very close to 338wm power with out the recoil. I can tell you a white tail deer doesn't like them very much. Never saw anything drop so fast when hit with either a 200gr or 225gr out of the 35Whelen/AI.

OP sorry if I got off track with Dan somethings can't be helped. :)>)

No problem with that. The 35 Whelen is another great round that is also based off the 30-06 necked up to 35cal.It too can digest an incredible amount of medium fast burning powder and launch some really heavy bullets at great velocities in a very efficient case.

When you blow out the shoulder on either one they really come to life and can be pushed pretty hard but I keep mine around 62Kpsi even though I know 65Kpsi is still no problem for it with good brass.

That's what I noticed about the 338-06.I guess when A-Square made it a factory round,SAAMI set the max pressure above 63,000psi.

The new data from Alliant shows Power Pro 2000 doing some amazing things with 250 grain bullets. I think when I looked they were doing about 2700 from a 35 Whelen. That is amazing stuff right there.

I think one of these days I need to get the old 35 Whelen out and running again. Since I have been spoiled with a little longer LOP I have let the Whelen sit, but it might be time to dust it off and make it huntable again.

I'd imagine if PP2000 does that with the Whelen, you'll get good results with the 338-06 as well.

We live in wonderful times for the reloader with all the powder and bullet choices we have today,as reloaders,we can do amazing things. It's a matter of getting the right combination working together.

Sweet shooting!!

I build my 338-06AI a few years back to shoot 225gr bullets. The AB's and TTSX shoot quite nicely...lol.

I think this rifle just loves the 200gr Nosler Silver Ballistic Tip at around 2800fps.

2800 is the sweet spot in my rifle as well with the 200 BT. They just shoot tiny groups with H380 for me. Warm and cold weather.

Gosh darn! Is there anything better than a rifle that does that on command?
