Are the new M70's all of the old Pre-64 design or are they a mix along with the push feed? Also are those Pre-64's of the same specifications as in will there stocks be a drop in for the old Pre-64's. Yes I'm aware that the WSM family won't work with the 06 family. Just thought the resident M70 experts might know.

As far as I know, everything now is CRF. I'm pretty sure the SC factory has built nothing but rifles with the claw extractor.

On the Winchester web site, they make this statement: "Today's Model 70 has the all new M.O.A.™ Trigger System, improved fit and finish and enhanced accuracy to go along with its classic Pre-’64 controlled round feeding, Three-Position Safety and solid, sure handling. The M.O.A. Trigger helps the model 70 deliver the extreme accuracy benchmark 1" group at 100 yards. It’s what you deserve in your rifle." That would indicate that there are no push feed models offered at this time.

I think I am understanding your second question. A pre 64 barrel has a barrel band, so a current model 70 stock will not have the barrel band cutout. So no a current stock will not drop in fit a pre 64, unless you inlet the barrel band.

I hope that is what you were asking...

Pat

I also doubt that the new MOA trigger would fit into a Winchester made or USRAC made stock without some inletting as well. I am not sure about what would be required but I would expect some inletting changes from the Model 70 trigger assembly.

I know this though, the new SC made M70's are truly some nice rifles. I am biased (yeah, you guys didn't know that did you) but the ones I have seen and handled have been well made with triggers that break clean, maybe still a little heavy but clean and useable. Fit and finish seems to be really nice and overall, all blueing I have seen has been really nice. I think Winchester will again be riding high. They are actually bedded with an AcraGel like compound and floated from the factory! Was that so hard to accomplish..... Jeeze, about .10 worth of materials and just about all of their rifles will smash acceptable groups right outta the box.. What more could you ask for?

Scotty I played with a new one this week a little bit, if they would make some lefties I would be more than willing to try them. 8)

Blessings,
Dan

I hope they start to accommodate you Southpaws soon Dan..

I wonder what happened to the USRAC tooling for the SS, left handed, short action Mod 70 that they made a few of?

They are making some very fine rifles now, I agree.

My dad acquired a coyote lite in 243 and its overall fit/finish/function/accuracy is great right out of the box. Very nice rifles...

I've always liked the CRF M70s just as much if not better then the M700s, especially the later models of M700s there putting out now a days.

Don't look now Jorey but us Winchester guys are in your head!

When I was a kid, my stepfather and I had matching red winchester hats. He had a beautiful buck antelope mount on the wall that he'd killed with his .264 Westerner when he moved to NM. I always admired that buck and that rifle. Because of that, I've always been a Model 70 guy. My old pre-64 .270 ain't much to look at, but she sure delivers the goods. I'm working up a load for my daughter's brand new M70 SG .270 Win. It's got the prettiest wood I've ever seen on a factory rifle. That's why I had to make it mine, errr hers. I did the trigger myself (outside of removing the damn epoxy, it was pretty simple), and was impressed to see the glass bedding from the factory. My old New Haven M70 .300 Win looked like they had used hot melt glue for bedding and had a big ol' nasty barrel (.310) that I could never get to shoot under an inch. She's long gone now. These new SC guns are impressing me. Last weekend was pretty windy, but my 140AB/IMR7828 load that my gun likes is showing some promise in her rifle. Cross your fingers the wind will hold and the loads will go sub-MOA. I know a lot of the guys are contemplating that Super Grade .257 Bob that's in the Cabela's shooting catalog. I hope someone will pull the trigger, buy one, and tell us how it shoots. Yup, it's good to be a M70 fan now-a-days.

Joe, we're going to get along just fine mate! Don't forget the Pre-64 when you visit though!

Just bought a new model 70 FW 22/250 and what a nice rifle! Fit and finish is just about perfect. When it's time for a barrel it will end up being the 250 Savage I have always wanted in a Winchester Model 70

Now you're talking! I really want to give a .250 Savage a try. Now that I have my .300 H&H, it's number two on my list of chamberings I want, right after a .222 Remington.

MAN Would that be nice! CL

Hopefully they will come out with the new model 70 Super grade in 300 H&H. I got introduced last year to the 300 H&H in the Ruger No.1 it's one of those rifles that shoot just about every thing accurate. 168 gr Barnes X bullets, 180 gr. Speer Mag tips, 200 gr. Speer grand slams and Sierra 220 gr. RN all shoot around 1 1/4 inch. The Ruger no.1 250 Savage ended up being a big disapointment.

I shoot a 1950 Mdl 70 30-06 24" barrel with Leupold 2x7 I inherited maybe 20 years ago from an uncle who died a few years later. My aunt bought it for him when he was in dental school in 1950. I don't know what all he has taken with it, but for me I have taken a number of elk, deer, antelope, coyote, jackrabbits, bobcat and that is all I can remember right now.

With my handloads of 165 gr using 57.0 gr H4350 it will shoot under 3/4" 5 shot groups if I do my part and occasionally 1/2".

It is getting heavy for me to carry all day now that I am in my more mature years, so if I am walking a long distance in the mountains I tend to carry my Kimber Classic Select in .308 with Leupold 2x7.

Oh man, the gears are churning now! I might just have to think about looking for a Fwt. .22-250...
