Welcome GS! Much nicer crowd here. Love to see your .270 loads. Not so much your 7STW tho as it may create another desire...

Another .270 guy  .

I have found this forum to be dominated by a fun and extremely knowledgeable group.

If it has to do with guns, reloading, hunting or anything related to those things, someone here knows about it.

Welcome, Greenshovel. I remeber you form the Cabela's forum. I hand load for both the .270 Win, as well as the 7mm Rem Mag as well as other calibers. Bill (Elkhunter) is our resident 7mm STW guru, when he is not using his .300 Win Mag.

Welcome aboard Steve! You have two great picks and that STW you have is going to be mighty impressive I think. You have good choices in bullets and the ABs will shoot!

This is a great place. Great folks with so much info your going to be blown away. Watch out for that Dr. Mike. Before you know it, he'll have you looking for more M70's and a 94!

Hark! Did I just hear my name disparaged? I should think that a person could do worse than have a Model 70 or two laying around, or to have a few Model 94s in the safe.

Welcome. As said we have some enablers floating around here but can anyone have too many guns? I don't believe so. Each has a story to tell. The knowledge base here and the experience that is shared is overwhelming. Plus it's an awesome group of individuals. You will enjoy it.

Thanks Scotty, I am beginning to believe that you can never have to many Winchesters

Thanks for everyone welcome to this forum

Welcome GS -

You'll find the knowledge here is virtually limitless. It will be a great resource for all the cartridges you listed and the ones you pick up in the future... because you can count on these guys talking you into something new. :)

Greenshovel, glad if I was able to help you getting started with that rifle.

Upon reflection, my take on the Cabela's Forum is that forum management does not care much what goes on there. They (in one case that I know of) take 18 year old girls who are starting secretaries from Orem, Utah and make them Moderators. She is now not working at Cabela's. What adult, who is not cruel and twisted, whould put a green, young woman into that (first) job with zero training and nothing said but, "maybe you can handle this". A lazy incompetent who is untrained and worthless himself, that's who would do that to a young person! Of course these kids are overwhelmed!

I wrote to James Cabela about this weirdness and asked that Cabelas train some competent Moderators, at least paying attention to the limits of controlling human decency and conduct with some aforethought, plus a little better grasp of pro-American decorum. He ignored me but that is ok, I vote with my checkbook and his stores will never get another cent from my family.

Your going to have a great time here Steve. Hit Jake up for some STW data as well. I think he has been having great luck with the 160's and Retumbo, but I don't wanna steal his thunder. He has some really impressive groups as well..

Greenshovel, If I might ask, whence the handle, "Greenshovel?" Interestingly enough, I never went to Harker Heights; but, then, I wasn't stationed at Killeen and I only went to Temple on a few occasions. There is some good looking country down that way, though.

Mike sorry about not answering the whole question earlier. I just saw this, greenshovel refers to the color of a motorcycle that I used to ride. I used to build bikes on the side but when everyone and their brother started to build them it wasn't profitable no more. I still ride H-D and have for over 20 years but do not turn wrenches on them as much any more.

I was stationed at Ft Hood for pretty much my whole career in the Army, and decided to retire here in Texas. I am originally from Mass and Maine but have lived over half my life in the south thanks to the military. We love Texas!

Yeah, Texas is a state of mind. I never ceased to be amazed when I was at the med school in Dallas as I watched all the New Yorkers who came back for studies or to assume positions. They hated Texas; it was nothing like what they had left. Within six months, you couldn't pry them out of the state with a crowbar. Fascinating.

Well then you and I are some of the few that escaped. Have a few friends who did too. Canadians, I guess they kick you out if your there too long.

Jake,

I made my children memorise "Texas, Our Texas" and sing it every morning before breakfast. We looked toward the Alamo and pledged our allegiance to the State of Texas before they could eat.

I spent 6 months near San Antonio and I believe I called my airline every other day during my last 30 days there. I was very fearful that something would go wrong with my flight schedule and I would have to stay another day there. :? Too each his own I guess. I did enjoy the TexMex immensely tho.

Welcome to the forum. I am new here as well and I can tell you the people here are great! I am also starting to build some loads for a pair of .270s I recently came across. I had been looking for a Pre-64 but could never find the one I wanted so I gave up and bought a new Model 70 Super Grade in .270 Win. Just as soon as I did, I found the one I wanted, an original 1958 so now I have two.

I haven't shot either yet but am going to start working up loads for both. I am nostalgic for older powders/bullets and have always had the following in the back of my mind.

"My pet handload is the 150 grain Nosler in front of 58.5 grains of No. 4831 for around 2,950 foot-seconds in a 22-inch barrel." Jack O'Connor - The Art of Hunting Big Game in North America - Medicine for Elk and Moose

"With the 130-grain bullets in the .270 I load 62 grains of No. 4831 for a velocity of about 3,140 in a 22-inch barrel." Jack O'Connor - The Hunting Rifle - .270, .280 and .284

Does anyone know if Hodgon had changed the formulation for 4831 in the 50 years since these books were written as both of these loads are well above the max.

Hopefully someone can help!

Todd

That is a beautiful pair of 270's! Man, what a nice set of rifles!

I think 4831 has been changed some. I think the speeds attainable are still there, just gotta work up a little to them. Scotty

Wow nice set of rifles, I am a born again Winchester man myself. I have handled quite a few rifles in my time and also picked up two Winchester within the last six months. I am glad that I did, for me the Winchester just feels perfect in my hands.

Todd,

The formula likely hasn't changed, but you are likely to get quite a bit of variation from differing lots. These are now manufactured and are no longer surplus powders. Even were you to have the same lot of powder, after a period of time, subtle changes in burn rate occur. Consequently, good looking rifles. Of course they are good looking, they're Winchesters.
