Man, I am pretty jealous Pat! A BULL with a smokepole during the RUT!.. That would make Jeremiah Johnson smile from above!

Sean, I'd love to come out for one of those cow hunts sometime.. Fun way to fill a freezer or two..

Funny you mention JJ Scotty!

When I was explaining to my wife about the whole wilderness hunt and basically being alone with no cell phone or way to get help if something should happen she was pretty uptight about it. She asked " what do you do if you fall and break your leg?"

I replied " Lord hope it be a white man who finds me" she obviously didn't get the joke!

The oryx hunt would be very interesting, Pat. Hey, pray for a safe delivery of a healthy child for your family.

Man that is so cool. You might have to get one of those Spot locators . I understand they come in pretty handy. When I had my Mtn Goat permit surprisingly my cell phone worked in most spots. Not all, but quite a few. Hope you get a monster of a bull! They can grow them big in New Mexico!

Thanks Dr. Mike. All is good to go so far. We did find out that it is a girl so I am definitely screwed having 3 girls already.....

David I have been researching both The SPOT and the Delorme Inreach. The spot is cheaper in the short term, but has a yearly subscription whereas the Delorme you can go on a month to month basis, or just pay for a few months a year. The Delorme also lets you send AND receive texts via the satellite systems.

My new friend here in NM ( game and fish detective) uses a SPOT and has used it to let his wife know he is safe, but he does say the subscription fee is tough to swallow during the times he doesn't use it.

Either way, hunting an area where you literally are cut off from civilization is probably the closest I will ever come to being on a hunt similiar to an Alaskan bush hunt ( did I mention 4 weddings to pay for?)... haha.

Hey, nothing better than daddy's daughters. Chasing away the boys gives us something to look forward to. Daughters can be great fishing and hunting partners, however.

Amen Dr. Amen.

My two oldest ( 7.5 and 5.5) and I were out in the back yard Saturday and I grabbed the old red ryder from the gun safe and we sat down for some old fashioned fun.

To my utter excitement Mack ( 7.5) was able to reach the trigger while shouldering the rifle perfectly. She even was able to figure out when old dad put the safety on in between trigger pulls.
I put up a two dot bullseye about 10 yards away and she even called out which bull she was aiming for.

Darn it if one of those pieces of dirt from the good old New Mexico wind didn't get in my eye just then.

Allie did pretty darn good as well. Never missed the 8.5x11 inch paper. f

I wouldn't trade any of that for the world.

Little girls seem to attract "dirt in the eye". I know....mine is 22, I'd give a rifle and a weeks pay if that were still the fun it used to be. Enjoy. CL

My son was my hunting buddy. My girls were fishing buddies. My middle daughter was a better fisher than most of the men I went with. She could definitely bring in some fine salmon and trout. My eldest daughter has begun shooting at the range with me in recent years, which is quite nice. Memories of times spent on rivers around the Lower Mainland of British Columbia are priceless.

Well good luck on the new edition! We also have a busy house so I understand completely , 4 kids oldest is 8 coming 9 , youngest turned 3 in December . 3 girls and the youngest is a boy. My oldest loves fishing , and has shot the old cooey single shot at paper. I believe as politically incorrect as it seems in a lot of people's eyes all my kids will be hunters and fishermen( women) . No doubt in my mind.
Alot of guys use the spot going for sheep here in the Rockies. I have mixed emotions with the new technology. On one hand your out there to get away from it all and rough it. On the other hand the wife and children need to have some piece of mind aswell. Sounds like the Delorem system may be the ticket. Good luck how many days now? Lol.

Hey! that's not nice

Enjoy your hunt Pat and congrats on the draw. Only the first of many good New Mexico hunts

I laughed out loud on that one Cheyenne. Once I explained to my wife the scene in JJ where Hatchet Jack met his end, she thought it was pretty good too.

Pat congratulations on both counts. I am looking forward to a real good account of this upcoming Elk hunt with lots of photos I hope. Also for a healthy baby to soon bless your family.

Blessings,
Dan
