Congrats on an awesome Sheep! Man, what a hunt! That looks like your planning and prep really came in for you! Great job! Scotty

Awesome photo's and one incredible ram! He is absolutely gorgeous! :!: You must have had a grin on your face the whole ride down off the mountain looking at that beast positioned on a horse and being taken home. He should be fine eating too!

Post some more pictures and give us a frontal on look. He appears to flare quite a bit and ones that do that give me the vapors :!: :!: ........

Just so you know that ram is as nice as anything that Montana produces. Sure we have some big ones here as well, but we don't have a lock on large sheep by any means! More pictures and more story please :!:

Tell us about the shot? How far away did you spot him? How close did you get? How close could you get the horses? You know, things like that...

Terrific pictures and an even better sheep. Great horns and awesome brooming. Congratulations and thanks for posting it up!!!

Congrats on the awesome ram. He is a bruiser. The country you were in looks good too. I love sheep hunting and cant wait for the details on your hunt. I need to plan another one soon before those mountains get any taller. Sheep hunts will change your life. Am I right? Brian

Found this guy a couple weeks ago during a scouting trip
072.jpg

Enough to keep a guy from sleeping. We were able to find him again a couple days before the hunt started and stuck with him for the most part during his wanderings, he looked like a grand old ram and I really wanted to collect him. Opening morning found him in a tough spot, timbered fortress surrounded by rockslides and avalanche chutes. An hour and a half of climbing, descending, traversing, climbing and sweating profusely, doing the whole thing in reverse because he moved and then more climbing put us in position for my first encounter, which involved steep angles, noise, bad words, a certain amount of nosler brass gone forever in the rockslide and a strong urge to vomit as the echo of clattering hooves faded away into the soft morning air. Fairly certain that the awesome ram we had been watching for days had just vanished unscathed forever, we climbed down to pick up his trail and make damn sure he was okay (and possibly find some dramatic looking precipice to fling myself off of) before coming up with a plan B. You probably saw from the spotting scope pic in the first post that there were six rams hanging out in there. Three were still laying on top of the ridge chewing their cud and laughing at the sweaty guy who had just run off two of their buddies with all of the racket, and a fourth one suddenly emerged from the timber ten feet away from me like he's coming down to see what all the hassle is and straighten things out.

I took his picture and went back to feeling stunned and spooked, not really wanting to talk about it, and about 250 yards downhill I see beady sheep eyes and a pile of horns peeking up at me over some rocks. I did all the math I was able to do in my head, and after what was probably too long a time I deduced that there were still six sheep in the evil steep dungeon we had hiked ourselves into. I made some kind of gasping screeching noise to alert my partner and scrambled into a shooting position that involved jamming myself into a crevice in the nearest cliff, from which I had a solid rest and could also be easily flung if the need arose. This time brain and body were on the same page and the AccuBond did what it was supposed to do. Took three of us quite awhile to get him out to the horses. Game and Fish biologists scored him at 174 and change and aged him at 15 years old, making him the oldest ram taken by a hunter on record in new mexico.

here's one for the vapors 6mm

Great account, Tobey. You permitted us to share your hunt in a delightful fashion. Good that you didn't have to fling yourself off a precipice.

Tobey,
Thanks for sharing the details on your hunt. After looking at your last picture posted I think the vapors are getting me too. Brian
