Most of you guys have seen that Rem 700 in 22-250 that I setup last year. My goal was to shoot a chuck at 500 yards with it. Sadly the longest kill last year was only 475 yards confirmed. This year has been going pretty good. I have been shooting a lot more, and I got to shoot at a 500 yard rifle range. I now have a very accurate drop chart made up.

Well last night a went out with my step-father, Dan, to some new fields that I got permission to hunt on. The longest field is 950 yards long and 650 yards wide! Now that's big for NW PA. Anyway we set up on a pile of wrapped hay bales and waited. Condition were 90 degrees+, no wind, and overcast. It was also very very humid. It didn't take long for the action to heat up. Dan shot the first at 137yds. I took one in the face at 222yds. We watched as two chucks at 218yds were fighting. We planned on Dan shooting the one on the left and I'd take the one on the right. Well we counted to 3 then shot. I dumped mine, but he missed his. It ran to its hole and stopped, big mistake. I piled it up right at its hole. Dan then shot one at 234. Then one popped up at 345, and I nailed it.

This is when it started to rain! We were about to pack up when Dan spotted one standing up. He tryed to get me to spot it, but I just couldn't find it in my scope. Then I realized he was looking at one way out there. I ranged it at 588 yards! I quickly checked my drop chart and dialed 9.5 MOA into my Vortex Viper 6.5-20. I followed the chuck around with my crosshairs as it fed. Finally it started to thunder and he stood up to see what all the noise was about.

Boom..................smack! It seemed like it took 5 seconds for the bullet to get there, but was really less than one. He flipped backwards and rolled around a little, then was still. So i had my new personal record 588 yards! Next goal is 600yds

Steve,

Way to go buddy. 588 yds on a woodchuck is awesome.

Holy smokes! Now that is some awesome shooting on a woodchuck! Congrats buddy! That is really slick. Talk about feeling good with your load and rifle! Great shooting!

Thanks guys! Up until a few years ago, I'd never taken a shot at anything over maybe 250. I gotta say i'm addicted. I just wish i would have taken a camera along.

That is a great record. Congratulations on some fine shooting. Now, you need to get that on video so we can all share vicariously.

Very cool, thats a very small target at that distance. After you make a few more shots like that, an elk is going to look really big.

Man I forgot that I even had a camcorder. I got one that takes small DVD's when I was in Iraq. I'll be sure to take it next time when I go for 600!

Good job SE that was a heck of a shot.
Maybe photos next time :) but if not story is just about as good.
Good luck next time out.

Blessings,
Dan

Nice shootin. Sounds like you're ready for a CMP Vintage sniper match. The X-ring is about the same size at 600 yards. Only catch is you have to shoot it with an original or replica WWII vintage sniper rifle. Lots of fun. What bullet you slinging? Enquiring minds want to know. I'm contemplating building an extreme range yote rifle on a mauser or savage action in either 22-250 or 220 swift with a 1-7 twist barrel to stabilize some of the LR black rifle bullets in the 70+ gr range. Wouldn't want a high round count with that one, I'm sure it would eat barrels.

I'm shooting a 52gr Sierra Matchking over 37.5gr of IMR 4320 and CCI 200 primer. Brass is new Win. Getting about 3860fps. It will put them in one ragged hole at 100 yards.

That is some fine rifle work.

Practice sure does make a big difference doesn't it. In both skill and confidence.
