As for velocity, I get 3019 fps with the 160 gr AB. I have clocked 3240 fps with the 140 gr AB but backed it down to 3150 fps. This is with a 24" barrel. You should be able to do this or a little more with a 25" barrel and long throat.

Wow. I can not even touch 3000 fps with my 7mm Rem Mag, I'm close but that is impressive. Makes me want to rebarrel my 30-06.

My loading manual shows 60 grains of 4350 with a 160 at 3000, for a 7mm Rem mag, I am loading slightly hotter. Always start low and work up.

I don't think you would have any trouble getting 3K out of any 160 in a 7mm Rem Mag. The problem is they load the WSM hotter than the Rem Mag, even though they are built in the same rifles. Heck, I believe you can get really close to 3K with 175's in most 7mm's with diligent load work and a chrono. I have nipped at it a few times in mine and still think that would be the ultimate 7mm Mag combo (175gr PT and almost 3K)! Scotty

The 7mm 175 gr PT at 3000 fps would penetrate into tomorrow!

You picked a great chambering and a great spouse!

I can state without equivocation that even at 2850 fps, the 175 PT is a great bullet that smacks down moose, elk and black bear with authority.

No matter how well that new project shoots it wont top that wife! We will need to see pics of the rifle. Pics of the wife are up to you..... :)

To the 280 AI shooters:
Where did you guys find dies for a 280 AI. I have only found Hornady dies so far. Is that all that is available?
BP

I have Redding dies, # 80428 280 Remington Improved 40*
These are "C" series dies.

JD338

I have the same dies as JD. I think I got them from Midwayusa. I got them over the RCBS because they where cheaper, and I hear redding makes a better die.

6mm,
Definately not afraid to use the 280 Rem. or AI for elk. I just have bigger options (300 Wby, 338 WM). I have a Ruger No.1 280 Rem as well. The 280 is probably my favorite caliber, but others in the safe might be better suited for elk.

Just what I like to see, another Ruger #1 FAN!

At the risk of high jacking my own thread... I have 2 No.1s and love them both. The first is a 22-250 that I bought the day before my son was born. It was made in 1971- the same year I was born. It is in mint condition with fantastic wood. I justified it by telling my wife that it was for him. I think she saw right through that one, but it still lives in my safe. He is 3 now and askes all the time when he can "go huntin' with my Ruger No. 1". Instant family treasure. The other is a 280 Rem. These were only made for 3-4 years before being discontinued. Not considered "rare" but definatley "uncommon". Both shoot great. I will have more in the future... after the 280 AI??

Pretty hard to hijack a thread around here! We do it so much, it is uncommonly normal and actually makes for better reading. Scotty

Now, that is humorous. Funny, but true. If the initial topic is of sufficient interest to someone, it will be refocused sooner, rather than later.

It snowing outside and I just replaced the headlight bulb in my Chevy Trail Blazer.
Whats for supper tonight? I am making venison burgers on the grill.

It is the warmest day yet, this winter. Why wasn't I at the range instead of loading up. Now, I've got to go tomorrow. It was actually 2 degrees today! But I did get to drive Mama's new car.

Oh look, a squirrel!

What did she get Mike?

Toyota Venza. I tried to talk her into a Toyota Tundra. She wouldn't go for it, nor would she let me spring for it. There are bunnies hopping all over the woods right now and I need to make some hasenpfeffer.
