Welcome to the forum. Varget will certainly work in your 30-06, but you will likely witness better performance with IMR4350 or even with IMR4831. Is there a particular reason you are wanting to use Varget. QuickLoad projects a maximum charge of 53.0 grains of Varget with the 165 grain Nosler Partition. You will get about 100 fps more velocity with a maximum charge of IMR4350, a better fill ratio and a more sustained pressure curve--all of which would lead me to recommend that powder over Varget.Gromit
Gromit4, welcome aboard; I too must cast my vote that with 150-180 grain bullets and 4350 I have seen the best accuracy and velocity in my 30-06 for which I have done quite extensive handloading over the years. With 180-220 grain bullets you will see the best performance with 4831, RL-19 or 22, or powders with similar case filling slow burn rates.
Now having said that, I don't want to be a broken record. Like Dr. Mike I am curious as to why Varget for this bullet weight. Varget by nature is a faster powder which really shines in 308 sized cartridges. Although I have seen great accuracy in a 30-06 with Varget and 150 grain bullets though the velocity is still not what you would get with any of the various 4350 powders.
You have a great rifle doubtlessly (its chambered for THE American 30-06) and so I have no question in my mind that you will get it to shoot well with a wide variety of tailored ammunition.
Any further information you could provide will be helpful! Again welcome, we can always use more gunnies!
Well I've used IMR4350 with 165gr.NBT in my 30-06 and they shoot rather well. Have also used H4350 with 165gr.NBT and it too worked well. Varget will work, but it will give you about 65FPS slower than H4350 or IMR 4350 at max load. Check out the http://www.hodgdon.com web site for load info. Welcome to the forum.
While I'm not trying to beat a dead horse, I just worked up 168gr Nosler Ballistic Tips over H4350 in my -06 with sub half inch groups at 2900fps as the result. If you're just dying to use Varget, and you don't mind losing some velocity, it will work. But my money is on H4350.
Oh yeah my vote for a 165 in the '06 would be either RL19 or Ramshot Hunter. If you have it available in your area, the latter for sure. These two have always given me the best velocities & accuracy.
I've gotten great accuracy from RL15 (almost identical to Varget) and RL22, but not the speed.
If speed is not your entire goal, and varget gives great accuracy then go for it, reloading is for fitting your needs, not anybody else's goals. There are plenty out there using reduced loads, thus I make no fuss in you choosing what you like, just remember that you have options and plenty of people willing to share them with you. P.S. I do personally like h4350, very accurate, above factory ammo speed. And if you choose to load a tssx bullet I believe varget falls in there just nicely.
