New rifle project, what to chamber in?

Man if that was an actual .270 FWT barrel to go a long with the stock I'd trade you in a heart beat for my .270 EW M70 that I just bought. I've been wanting a SS FWT .270 for a long time but settled on the EW as they are roughly the same weight and I didn't have a problem finding one in my price range. Hard to beat the old .270 but I'd do it in a FWT contour barrel and finish at 22" just like the original.

A 250-300Savage Ackley Improved....of course.

or

A 25Winchester Short Mag and give the 257 Wby a run for its money.... CL

I thought so!!!!!
I actually think it was developed so that O'Connor whom was going to be Winchesters spokesperson would have something to talk about, that Winchester actually developed. I believe it took them 45 min. to develop the cartridge, and 60+ years to convince hunters that it offered something that an 06 couldn't provide. Later of course they actually developed something nearly new, and required a lot less effort to sell, the godfather of all successful elk cartridges the 300 Win mag. I am just full of trivia that is of no use to anyone. !!

Elkman,
I think I am getting lightheaded........................... why not just get 25 yds closer and take the 06 then both projectiles will arrive on the side of the Elk at the same velocity, and you wont have to sack that big heavy long barreled thing around all day?????
Just jokin as I know you love that MAGNUM.................... I think with a little research the godfather of all Elk calibers is probably something more like a .375 Ouch and Ouch isnt it??? :p

Ps Remember in an interview just before he kicked off old Elmer Keith sat there with that big old Cowboy hat and was quoted as saying about Jack O'Conner ..............." I got dam tired of always sucken hindtit" and thats the way it actually was! "Hell he was there"

Wayne Carlton sent out a large number of questionnaires back several years ago. I think in concert with the Rocky Mt Elk Foundation, around 2002 or so, regarding what cartridges elk hunters were using. In my early years more hunters were still using the 30/30 win, but the 06, and it's weak sibling the 270 were catching on fast, as well as the mags. If I remember (I will try and look it up later). In Wayne's survey the 06 (again as I remember), had moved up to
Number 1 and the 7mm mag was #2, followed by the 300 Win Mag, the 270 and who knows what else. It was an interesting read.

Updated info,
The 2009 survey at the RMEF Elk Camp showed the most popular Elk cartridge as follows: 3006, 300 Win Mag, 7 mm Rem Mag, 338 Win Mag, 270 Win, 300 B. most popular brand of scope by far was the Leupold, then Nikon. My memory apparently is not to bad.

What about a 6.5-284? That'd fill a gap in you arsenal, and it'd be an excellent caribou cartridge in my opinion.

I think for now I'm just going to snap up that 270 barrel and leave it as is. I've never had a 270 and it might make a good caribou/moose round for my wife. As it was I have been leaning towards the 6.5/06 and 25/06 ackley if I go wildcat, and 280 ackley or plain jane 30/06 if I go standard factory chambering. Any way I shake it will probably be a #3 contour to match the contour of the stock. Leaving it a 270 will give me time to figure out what I want to do with it.

Good call, nothing wrong with the 270, only going to get better as the new 150 ABLR's drop, and with 130-150 PT's around right now, I don't think much game is outta reach.. Looking forward to the pictures.

Sounds like a solid plan. There are no flies on the 270 Win, and your other choices are either appealing because of uniqueness or because of ready availability of components (barring shortages).
