I sold a Rem SPS 300WSM with a XCR Camo stock and a Timney Trigger. This was the extra $ I needed to get a 700 Sendero SF II in a 300 RUM. This is to be a project / learning curve for long range shooting. I've owned a 300RUM in a LSS that I sold a few years back and wish I didn't (Beautiful Gun that shot very well).
I'll get dies and components next month and start putting this together. I haven't reloaded a RUM before but after looking through this site I think I'll start with Retumbo and bullets ??? maybe 200gn AB or Bergers to start. Any hints around 300 RUM loads would be helpful !

This is going to be FUN!!

Here's what I suggest:
Nosler Brass (if you can get it) otherwise Rem
Fed GM215M
95gn of Retumbo
200 AccuBond.
My magazine's limit for COL is 3.67, so I imagine yours will be about the same, therefore I'd suggest trying 3.635 to start with as that's about where all of my RUMs are showing the best accuracy.

With the above load using Rem brass, I'm getting a 5 shot avg. velocity of 3137fps and it's sub-moa.

Congratulations on the Sendero 300 RUM. You are on the right track, 200 gr AB with Retumbo.
What are you going to use for glass? A Leupold Mark 4 or VX3 4.5x14x40mm is just about perfect for this rifle.

Teknys,

Congrats on the new toy ! As already stated... Retumbo & RL-25. I see slightly better groups with the 180's, but the 200gr A-bond is nothing to shy away from.

You're gonna love it! I've got the CDL version 700. It's at the smith right now getting glassed, floated, and pillar bedded at the moment, as I figured now with all the big game seasons out of the way, it would be a good time to get the most accuracy rung out of it. I'm actually looking forward to shooting it some more this spring while it's cool and pleasant.

My load is exactly the same as RichRacer1's except I was low on Fed215Ms, so I use WLRM, everything else being equal. I'm not sure how far you're wanting to push yours, but you may want to do a search for "EGW 20 MOA base". It is MUCH less expensive than the Ken Ferrell base but just as good quality and effectiveness. I mounted a 5.5-16.5x40 Monarch UCC on mine which has plenty of ups to get way out there as far as I ever plan to shoot. It of course will need to be reassembled and sighted after I get the rifle back. With my load and a 300 yard zero, the trajectory is 3" high at 100 and 11" low at 400, with 2 tons of energy coming out of the muzzle. Enjoy!

JD338 - as for what glass?
I have a new VX3 4.5x14x40 that I just put on a Sako 75/270WSM.
Also have a Nitrex TRII 3x15x50 that I was going to put on this RUM and see how well I like it. If it doesn't work out 100% then the VX3 will go on.
The 300WSM I just sold had a VX3 3.5x10x40 BC that I kept, so it would go on that Sako if I pull the 4.5x14.

Well if you are wanting to get into long range shooting the bigger the glass the better you can see small targets far away. Moving the 4.5-14x40 would bee good glass out to 6-700 yards but if you are planning on shooting farther than that I would go with a 6-18 or something like that.

PUT THE LEUPY ON THE HARD KICKER!

+1 on POP's comment......

Not sure what the warranty is on the Nitrex unit, but you may find out if you place it atop the RUM ??

I have that Nitrex on a 22-250 and have decided to keep it there. That 22-250 is setup already and making little tiny groups, I hate to mess with it.
I'll move that 4.5x14 Leupy over to the Sendero and when I "out grow" that power I'll look into a Mark 4 or something of similar glass.

Talking with a couple of guys at work who shoot long range, they lean towards the Berger 190 and 210s. I just don't have any experience with them, so maybe I'll try a box and see what gives between them and the 200gn AB.

Congrats on the new beauty!! Nice rifle and caliber...

I owned a 700 LSS in 300 RUM for 2 years, put 1200 rounds through it and rebarreled to 338 EDGE now...

Only 2 bullets you really need is the 200g AB or 210g VLD. And in all actuality, the AB is really the better of the two if you ask me. It dont give up much in BC, and its just a better bullet for elk and bear in my opinion and experience.

I used 92-94g of H1000 with the 200g AB and 88-89g H1000 with the 210's. 200's @3150-3200 and 210's @3000, not a whole lot of difference between the 2 at 1K.

Shot them both out to 1150 yards on 15" gongs and both did equally as well.

I prefer the AB for elk and bear.

I would also put the Leupold on your RUM. It will withstand the recoil that will be generated by the beast.

Also, I like 18-20x scopes for 1K shooting. You may find 14x is not enough zoom at longer ranges on smaller targets. It will definately get you started though and many like 14x and do just fine out to 1K with it. I just prefer to have a bit more of an exact aim point with the litle extra power.

Thanks for all the input!
Say Remingtonman_25_06, your just down the road west of me a 150 miles or so. (Lewiston).

That seems hot man. I maxed out at 94 gr of retumbo which is considerably slower than H1000. Maybe the diff in guns...

I put another post in the Reloading forum on a brass question.

Installing an Vias brake was one of the last things i did to my 300 RUM Sendero II and was worth every penny. It went from monster recoil down around a hard recoiling .308 Win.

That is an awesome looking rifle Bryan. Man, I bet it is nice having a little recoil relief. Scotty

Gonna take to the 600 yard range when ever this snow and cold weather leaves! I'll let you know when we do so you can try it out.
