Hi Guys, as usual I am thinking of a new rifle  and it is going to be my first custom job. I have spoke with the Doc and I have checked with 3 custom builders and have decided to go with RCM and I am going to get my 35 Whelen lefty. I am going to order it this coming week. I know that it won't be ready for this season so I might let Doc play with it for the break-in but I am not sure on that. I will be mounting a VX3 3.5-10 X40mm CDS on top and it will likely be the last one I rifle I get but that would be this year :).
All my hunting Buddies think that I am crazy to get a 35 as it is really not a long ranger and I am using the argument that when was the last time any of us shot something over 400 yards:). Well I always stated that the only rifle I should never have got rid of is the 35 whelen and I assure you that this one will be left to one of my family!!!

Blessings,
Dan

I apologize for not thanking Doc for his help. We need more like him to help with getting young people started in this great sport. Not that I am young but his knowledge and the knowledge on this forum is excellent

Blessings,
Dan

Here's my LH 35 Whelen Sako action, Browns precision stock and King stainless barrel. What have you decided to go with (action, barrel, stock, etc).

BTW the 35 Whelen with a good 225 gr bullet like the AccuBond around 2700-2800 fps is capable of 400 yard shots if needed. Great choice in calibers I know I will always need a 35 Whelen in my collection it's my favorite cartridge

Dan,

It is a great cartridge. I believe you've made a good choice of cartridge that wills stand you in good stead for many years to come. Consequently, it looks as if I'll get my 35 Whelen back this week. It is assembled now, I'm told.

Well here are the specs for my toy
Hart or PacNor Supermatch barrel 24" #4 contour
Defiance LH Tin Horn action with a Shillen trigger and a Precision Clip system.
McMillan Hunter stock glass pillar bedded with a free float.
and Powder coating
This is all thanks to my coming out of retirement and taking a contract job:) and of course the Good Lord:)

Blessings,
Dan

Sound like an exciting build! Good for you man! :)

That ought to work! Looking forward to seeing the completed rifle and of course a big ol' dead elk and/or bear with the new rifle in the photo as well.

Guy

The .35 Whelan is a great cartridge. Congratulations on the custom rifle. I hope it works out great for you.

I have utmost confidence in my Whelen for elk sized game to 400 yards. It is about 20" low at 400 yards as it is zeroed now, and if I am taking a 400 yard shot, I will make sure I take my time to make it right. Love the Whelen. If more folks shot them, they would see what hammers they are and what an efficient cartridge it is. 250's at over 2600 is serious medicine for anything here in NA. Just can't say enough good about the cartridge.

Can't wait to see your build. I think it sounds like a dream rifle. Mine would be a M70 FWT with a PacNor or Brux 24" tube. I really think I would leave alot of rifles behind if that was in the safe. Scotty

Well it is done  I just got off the phone with Travis (gunsmith) and my toy has been ordered.
Another fine young fellow who speaks very highly of Doc, which does not surprise me as most hunters are gentlemen.
I will keep you posted on the progress he advised that the thing that takes the longest is getting a stock so I have spoke to the Big Guy first thanking him for this opportunity and secondly if there is a chance for a stock sooner I would really appreciate it.
I went with Rocky Mountain Rifles and also ordered the VX-3 3.5-10 X 40mm to mount on top using a Talley base.

Blessings,
Dan

Travis is a fine lad. He does most of the stock work for RMR. They have a first-rate staff working away in the back rooms. I believe you'll be pleased, Dan. The workmanship of this crew can make Canada proud.

Yes he sure seemed to be a great young guy. Told me that you married him and his wife I was proud to hear that with the way the young people are thinking about marriage these days :( it is good to talk with a young person who has their head placed properly on their shoulders.
He told me that you know a thing or 2 about the industry which I already had realized. Do you know what the charge would be to break in the barrel? I could pay for the components.

Blessings,
Dan

Come up for a visit. Just me and the wife at home now lots of room :) only problem you might not get a lot of room in the spare bedroom my 2 labs think that they own the place

Blessings,
Dan

Travis is pretty sharp, as are all the fellows in the back. The staff there is top notch. Yeah, I performed the wedding ceremony for Travis and his lovely bride. I almost refuse to do such things, but her dad is a friend and personally asked if I would help as their pastor had to take a sudden leave. Of course, I'm willing to help. His wife has worked in the store for quite a few years herself. She is a real lady, and Travis is a fine gentleman.
