Just aquired this Ruger 77 today but it doesn't have the typical ring cut outs. Has a tang safety. I was wondering if any of you long time Ruger fans could tell me what I have here?

Nice looking but is it a 6mm or are you going to keep us in suspense? You can go to the Ruger site and they have a chart where you can look up serial numbers and see what year yours was made in I believe.

David,
It's a 7mm Rem mag. I don't own one and when I was able to pick this one up for < $350 I couldn't resist. It looks to be in very good shape.

That's a M77 MkI... nice find. I had one in .243 about 1981 or so.

Here you go for the year your rifle was made. Just click on the 77 category and search until you find the range your serial number is listed in. Go to rifle instruction manuals and product history and click on show all and just search for your serial number. You will be able to locate the exact year it was made.

Just for fun I looked up my #1B's in 6mm and 30-06. The 6mm was made in 1976 and the 30-06 in 1980. My son's MKII 6mm was made in 2005.

If you're lucky you have a Douglas barrel on there. Ruger had them contracted before they got their hammer forging machines.
Mine had one. Shot 1.25" at 300 meters!

Looks like you have a Ruger "round top". Some people didn't care for Ruger's set up so Ruger ran some rifles without the built in scope bases. IIRC, they used the same bases as for the Remington 700. Dunno just how rare those rifles might be but I think they were only made for a short while. Good find.

The 77s with the tang safety without scope cuts were made from '68 until '85. They made the tang safety with scope cuts for a few years (1992 or so?) until the introduction of the MkII which is pretty much their current product.

The only true way to tell what year that rifle was built is to call them. Their call center people will tell you their Serial numbers are all over the board...its like Pirates Law. More of a suggestion than a real law.

I have a low numbered 6mm and it doesn't remotely follow the structure on the website. Built in early '69 with a "70-" prefix and a SSN that isn't in the approved structure.

Do you have anything that is typical? Deer, rifles, etc?
