Hi Team,
This is my wife's brand new Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 7mm-08 break-in target (Picture of rifle is in Product Review Section). Scope is a Vortex Viper HS 4-16x50mm. Keep in mind it was 39 degrees at the beginning of our morning and we were cleaning the rifle after every shot which we all know can break one's concentration for each shot, especially when you are brand new to shooting. With the exception of the last three shots, each shot was actually a fouling shot after each cleaning. (The top bullet hole is me from 100 yard sight-in adjustment after the store's bore sight of 31" low and 12" right. - I don't know why I tell a store it is all right to bore sight new scope mount; they are never close)

My Wife has never shot a high powered rifle before and only has shot about 12 rounds of 22LR for the first time this summer so I am very proud of her shooting. The three closest to the bullseye were her last 3 shots so you can see her incredibly fast progress in just 2 hours of shooting. :grin:View attachment Robins First High Powered Rifle 7mm-08 Target0001.jpg

This last target is showing what potential this rifle has - .788 (shot a number of 3 shot group targets like this - a few even slightly smaller group.) This is Sierra 120 gr with RL17, 48.3, 2937 FPS, COAL at standard 2.780 for the Sierra bullet.

About 40 rounds down the tube. Now ready to start working up a good accurate load for my new expert shooter (my wife  )
Thanks All

That looks as if it is going to be a real shooter. Congratulations!

That's a decent group. I'd hunt it!

Looks like things are working out well.

Congrats to the Missus! Looks like she's getting the hang of it. I think the 7mm-08 will be a great choice for her to break into shooting with. That 120gr load looks good too.

Hope you two enjoy many more good days at the range and hopefully in the woods.

Very nice shooting Steve! That 120 load looks to be right on time! How did she take the recoil from the rifle?

I would think those 120's at 2900 would be about as nice a deer load as there could be. Kinda thinking I may develop a load of 120's after I am done monkeying with the 160 PT's in my son's 7mm Mauser. I think a good 120 load for deer and such and then a 160 for bigger stuff would be just the ticket!

How did the BTE, Kroil and Iosso work out for cleaning it up? Tell Mrs. 338WinMag I said congrats and great shooting!

You should be very proud of the wife and the rifle. Those are some fantastic results for both! :) Coincidentally my wife was a first year hunter last fall and I bought her a 7mm-08. She was a quick study with it much like your wife looks to be. I loaded her up a box of 120g ballistic tips and she only needed one to drop her first whitetail. I was very pleased with the performance of the caliber, the bullet, and (most importantly) the shooter. Good luck to you both and give those 120g ballistic tips a try

I have a Ruger Hawkeye in 7/08. When I was at the range sighting it in for the first time a fellow shooter commented that it was same gun his girlfriend shot. After he had taken another shot with his 300 Whizzzbangmagnum (and flinched horribly) I asked if she shot better than he did. :)

I didn't measure the groups I got with mine, but there were three holes inside a 1" square so I was happy.

You guys crack me up.

338, your lady is off to a fine start. Congrats on a sweet shooting rifle and good job getting her out there!

Nice!
Congratulations to your bride on some very good shooting.

Congratulations to the Mrs.

The 7mm08 is a great WT deer round and the Weatherby Varguard a truly under rated hunting rifle. I own a Vanguard carbine (20" barrel) Series I and is a tack driver. All stock except a Bell & Carlson Medalist stock. My go to WT loads are 120 Ballistic tips/ H4895 and 130grs Speer BTSP/Varget. They are both Sub-MOA with a few 1/2 MOA groups thrown in. I still want to play around with the 140 grs Nosler Accubonds to see what they do.

Great job.

I wish I coild convince my wife to spend a day at the range with me.
