FINALLY got out this morning. Cool. Temps in the 50's. Overcast, turned to a gentle rain. Hiked like a monster this morning! All that cycling this year is paying off. Hunted where I'd seen a bear a few weeks ago, before season. No luck. Obvious bear sign. He's still there. Somewhere. Found three mulies. Got to within 50 yards of two before they knew I was around. Enjoyed that. Found four grouse. Not grouse season yet and the .375 didn't seem like the right medicine for grouse anyway.

Traveling light today. Bear rifle, a dozen rounds of ammo on my belt carrier. Hunting knife, pack with water, snacks, hunting license, bear tag, and lots of empty room for bear parts! Love those Ponderosa Pines!

Good country. Same area where I drew my late season mulie tag for later this year:

Who left this in the road?

Somebody didn't make the turn...

Okay, at least I got out for bear! Maybe next time...

Great pictures as usual. Those Ponderosa Pines are lovely trees.

They're my favorite Mike. They just mean "home" to me. I know I'm hunting my kind of country when I'm in the Ponderosa Pines.

At this time of year, you can almost guarantee that you can find me beneath a balsam pine at about four in the afternoon--hat pulled down low over my eyes, legs drawn up, rifle across my lap, body facing the sun and eyes closed. Something happens when I smell the balsam and feel the warmth of the afternoon sun. It is one of the most satisfying sensations in all of my life.

Doc, I must agree what beautiful photographs. A one hour nap under a tree is the happy hour for this 60 year old. The smell of fresh pine on a sunny fall day is what it is about .
Thanks Guy for update.

Blessings,
Dan

As usual great pics Guy. Not many pine forest here mostly hard wood and some Hemlock but I've still been known to take a nap leaning against a tree in the warm October, November sun. Been doing it as long as I can remember, my Mother use to scold me for being late for dinner when I would cozy up to a tree and take a nap while hunting squirrels or deer.

Great pictures as usual Guy.
Heck of a speed bump there and also a poor place to park a compact car.
Glad you got out.
Hope you find a bear. Your brat supply probably needs replentished.

Thanks for sharing Guy.. Makes me want to head to Montana now... I too love the smell of the forest. Good Luck in finding your bear...

Keep taking pictures like that and you're going to have a new occupation.
You'd give Ansel Adams a run for the money with some of them.
