Nosler #6 Questions & Comments

I have been looking through my new Nosler #6 and I like what I see. I like the fact that Nosler has included the Ramshot line of powders in several cartridges and added a few new cartridges as well.

One thing I noticed is the difference in "Load Density" volume compared to my old Nosler #4(no #5) . Load density is listed much higher in #6 than in #4. The 30-06 has an increase of roughly 10% across the board for example. Why is that? Has Nosler changed the way they determine "Load Density"? I have also noticed that the "Load Densities" listed for Hunter seem rather high. For example, the 30-06 180gr # 6 has a load density of 105% with 58gr of Hunter. I loaded a few 30-06 rounds with 180gr Partitions, 58gr of Hunter with an OAL of 3.30in. Giving this load a little shake, I could still get a shooka-shooka indicating that the powder was loose and not compressed. How can a load with 105% load density still have room in the case. I found the same thing with Hunter in my 7MM-08.

I know that publishing a manual like this is a huge undertaking and you will never be able to please everyone. That said, I must say that I was a little disappointed at the 300WSM data. There are a couple of new powders out there that have been designed for the shortmags and Nosler left them out of the 300WSM completely. I see that Hunter made the 300SAUM, 7mm WSM and 325WSM, but not the 300WSM. AA MagPro made the 7mm WSM and 270WSM , but not the 300WSM. I would have really liked to see what Nosler would have come up with using these two powders in the 300.

OK, I'm done.

My RG #6 is still on BO so I can't look up Load Density.
Could it be different manufactures of brass? Even if the same,
different lots might make a difference in the amount of powder the case can hold.

Could be. But the load densities are much higher in #6 than in # 4 in every cartridge whether the case is the same or not. For example the 270 Win Nosler #4, R-22,58gr, LD of 90%,
Nosler #6 R-22, 58gr, LD of 98%. Both with Win Brass.

7MM-08 Nosler #4, IMR 4895, 43gr, LD 85%,
Nosler #6 43gr, IMR 4895 LD 94%.
Both using Remington brass.

221 Rem Fireball, Nosler #4, 20.5gr AA 2015, LD 102%,
Nosler #6, 20.5gr. LD 116%.

It seems to me that this is more than a lot to lot variation. That still doesn't explain the a 105% LD of Hunter still having enough room to "shooka-shooka".

I'm glad to see th 6.5 RM in the new book and the muzzle velocity is about the same as the 264 WM and even edgeing it out in some bullet weights.

Book 6 load density was measured differently to give us a more accurate number. Instead of measuring the weight ratio by volume of powder, it was measured using the weight ratio by volume of water giving us a more accurate reading.
