I just joined the forum and did a search for "coyote + 204" and got some pretty old stuff from before the 40 gr .204 came out. My question is "Is this bullet designed for PD shooting with a thin jacket for violent explosive results or is the jacket of a thickness that could allow some penetration in... say...a coyote?" and what is the B.C.?

GAJoe,
How much penetration do you need on a coyote? Are you looking at taking them for their pelts? Or?
I used to shove 40gr B-tips out of my 22-250 @ 3900-4000 fps, hoping for
massive explosions, and they worked fairly well, with not too many exit holes. I also have a B-tip retreived from one that weighs 39.5grains still.
It's missing a portion of the orange tip, and that's about it.
In my opinion, I think the B-tips stay together a little better than the Blitz-kings.

I think the VMAX is the most explosive, followed by the btip. The small btips will kill coyotes, but usually dont exit because they dont get that far. Use a 50 or 55g and you'll get exits of 1 or 2 inches depending.

I use the 50 gr BT in my 22-250 and get exit wounds through the ribs about the size of a dime, some about the size of a nickel.
I had my first runner this past winter. The shot was 128 yds right at dark. I held tight behind the shoulder and touched off the shot. He spun at the shot at ran 40 yds into a thicket.
In the fresh snow I could see where the coyote approached the Foxpro caller. I followed the leaping tracks into the thicket and never found even a single drop of blood.
I found that coyote this spring only about 25-30 feet further in the thicket than where I stoped following his tracks.
My guess is that I didn't get an exit wound with that 50 gr BT.
I am considering switchiing to the 55 gr BT for winter coyotes.

I hope the 40 gr BT for the 204 Ruger is built more for the "bigger" critters like coyote.

I actually switched to the Blitz-Kings (shhh) from the B-tips. Shooting 55grainers. If I ever get exit holes (which doesn't happen often ) they are as you described, very small. 22-250 with 36grains of Viht N140
CCI BR primers.

Powerstroke,
Just into the boiler room. I've heard that most BT's in 20 cal are thin jacket for violent impact on PD size targets but resulting in surface splash on coyotes. I'm trying to find first hand reports of one that will penetrate to make it to vitals.
