Drifted back into the gunshop where I'd purchased the .45 Kimber not long ago.

They had three Ruger Number One rifles on hand, which is pretty unusual around here.

Used .300 Win Mag Number One B, with a good sized 3-9x scope
Used .223 Number One varminter - very nice wood and a heavy barrel - nice rifle!
New .270 Win Number One light sporter - hmmmm.... Had it been in .30-06, I just might have at least put money down on it.

That "light sporter" configuration really impresses me. Short. Handy. Lightweight. I like the sights on it and it looks just like a slightly downsized version of my .375 H&H Number One Tropical... Less barrel bulk & weight, but otherwise about the same.

I could see getting one of those to compliment the Tropical!

No - nothing "wrong" with the .270 of course - I just have dies, 40 - 50 years of experience loading the .30-06, and literally thousands of .30 cal bullets.

Guy,

Those Ruger #1's are nice.
Might be a good time to start looking at gunbroker.com.

I really like the 1B. I could see me changing directions for my future purchases towards Number 1Bs.

Actually, a .308 would be just fine for my purposes... Might rather have a .30-06, just because it does better with the 180, 200 & 220 gr bullets, but for what I really do - rather than what I'd like to do - a .308 would serve very well.

Or maybe one like this Guy in one of the best cartridges to ever push a bullet down a barrel, well at least right next to a 30-06 anyway! :)

Boy, either that guy has been using the same selling schtick for a long time, or nobody want to give him $900 for that rifle. I remember reading that same line about four months ago.

And I thought the 6mm was the best? :)

Kurt I said the .280 was "one of the best", so I'm still okay and I never hurt my 6mm Remington's feelings! It is hard to find a .280 in a #1B, but I wonder if the price is a bit high myself.

I have to wonder why he is seling it "WITHOUT RINGS."? Ruger #1B's come with rings. I know .280s are a bit scarce but I won't pay $900 for one, with or without rings.
Oh! If that #1B in .300 win. mag. the OP spotted is anything like mine, those things are damned accurate. One of the reasons Nosler pizzed me off is they dropped that 200 gr. bullet with the semi-round nose. My 300 #1B would put three of those into .375" when I did my part. When the small supply of loaded ammo I have with that bullet run out I'm gonna have to see if the spitzer version shoots that good. I also have that #1A in .275 as well but my favorite #1A is my 7x57.

Yeah, if I got a 7 of some kind, I'd likely just get the 7mm Rem mag again - have quite a bit of brass, bullets, ammo and dies for that already.

Kind of thinking I'd rather not have another magnum though... So the .308 & .30-06 "light sporters" are getting a hard look.

Better not buy though - or I'll have trouble making that Wyoming hunt with Steven in October!

I've got quite a few No. 1s. They're my favorite rifles.

The Light Sporters are probably my favorite, right now I'm shooting a .257 Roberts and 6.5x55 that both shoot exceptionally well. My .280 V is probably the rarest one I have.

Here you go Guy. You need a back-up rifle to your 25-06 just in case, especially since you are traveling that far. You just stop in Missoula for a few minutes and you can pick your poison to take with you. You have the choice of a #1B 30-06 with a fixed 4x Leupold, or a #1B 6mm Remington with fixed 6x-42mm Leupold.
