My hunting buddy and I drew Bull tags for the unit on the Salmon and Snake rivers here in Idaho. He shot this bull opening morning and we were 2.76 miles in from the gate.
When he was coming thru the brush pushing his cows fast all we could see were the long 4s and the long brown tines. I had a split second shot as he came thru and I actually hit him low nicking his elbow and taking hide and meat off the brisket. My buddy shot but missed. We took off running into the clearcut where they went and the cows were moving out but not the bull. We split and went around a small rise and I heard him shoot and then a whoop!! This bull was hunkered down and then tried a Whitetail buck style head down and sneaking directly away on a run. He was going up a small rise and my buddy tried to hit him between the shoulders but the bullet went a little high and hit him in the back of the head. You could say he was DRT.
The bull was a 5 pt. It had very nice bottoms points 1 - 4 and then NOTHING..?? The main beam just turned into a small drop point. We have never seen anything like this.
You know your getting older in life - the little things. Well the hind qtrs on this thing were the largest that I have packed out ever. We are feeling our age and pretty balled up after two days of packing meat.
We got out yesterday and seen 3 spikes, 25+ cows, 12+ mule deer does and one 3pt buck. I had to take today off but will be back at it tomorrow.
