Well guys, ONE MORE TIME! I am going to the range tomorrow with adjusted loads for my 8mm Rem Mag using the 220gr Sierra to see if I get at least acceptable hunting accuracy. :)

I changed my dies from the RCBS set that broke a primer pin with a set of Hornady New Dimension Series III to control run-out a little better. Changed OAL, also adjust my charge of IMR7828 using the charge that gave me the best with IMR7828 and also a slightly reduced load of IMR7828.

Tomorrow the wind will be coming out of the NNE which will be behind me at 11-13 mph but won't effect me much at all with the 100yd target. If I get acceptable hunting accuracy of 1" to 1 3/4" I will use it some this year, but will still be sending it off this spring for some work. Yep, had to try one more times

A little more detail - changed primers, powder charge, turned necks an some of the shoulder, reamed flash hole, trued primer pocket, trim length all the same, adjusted OAL, shooting five shot groups tomorrow with different powder charges of IMR7828, not leaving any rocks unturned.

Good luck Mike, hope all works out well so you can use it. Throttling it back just a bit might be just what the DR ordered for accuracy and no one but you will ever know.

have ya tried H-1000 or Retumbo?
RR

No, ran out of it before trying the big 8, but I never was motivated to get any because it did not perform well in Q/L's predictions.

Good luck Mike. Waiting to hear some good results.

Well, here is what happened. As I said I changed somethings in my load chain - dies were Hornady New Dimension Series III to control run-out a little better, also OAL of best group was my original charge of IMR7828, CCI primers instead of Rem 9 1/2M, turned necks and slightly the very top of the shoulder, trimmed all brass the same, reamed out the flash hole, trued the primer pocket. I also removed front and rear sights to and torqued down the front lug screw a little more.

The results are as follow - four shot group with original load that had been preforming the best did the best and it was moving at 3021fps on average with a flyer and measured with the flyer .898". It is not my shooting, it is the rifle - the flyer was not due to me, I shot all four rounds the same and they felt the same. I believe this is due to the rust just in side the muzzle area. The rest of the barrel inside cleaned up real nice with JB bore paste.

Mike that looks great to me for a 4 shot group, you would kill with that all day long with that.

What I do not understand and maybe you can help me to understand is why you think the rust at the muzzle is causing the flyer? Why does the rust effect 1 of the bullets and not the other 3? I don't think there is a person on here who does not get a flyer from time to time. I do and I don't have any rust in my barrel.

I should not have had a flyer because I know how it all felt at the bench each time I pulled that trigger. I really do know when I am shooting well. This has continued over a period of time. The rust is not on the muzzle only but down in the first quarter inch of the barrel on the left side about one quarter of and inch wide. The rust pits are filled with copper, then it comes to a point the copper is pulled out and then the pits grab all over again until full and then the process starts all over again. Trust me, it will be fixed this spring along with bedding the stock, but I will hunt with it some this fall.

I know what your saying about the flyers and know when I am shooting well and when I'm not. I know there are times when I should not have a flyer either but I do and I chalk it up to chit happens. Since I am not a machine I do not do everything the exact same every time. But then again I don't weight sort my bullets, brass, check bullet run out...ect.

Hope your spring time build is everything you wish it to be but in the mean time I would use it and not think twice.

Same here, 220's flying at 3000 shooting into 1.25".. Yeah, I would hunt everything with that and never wonder if the rifle was doing it's work.

How deep is that rust Mike?

Scotty, I will be using this rifle this fall and will just pull the trigger and not worry. The I am not quit sure how deep the rust, but it looks to me that at least 3/8" will have to be removed and then recrowned this spring.

Best of luck hunting Mike. I think I can relate cuz when I have something like that pitting and I know it's there it bugs me no end. Even if it shoots 'OK'. I have to say I approve of waiting until the season is over and I don't know what skill or resources you have. If it were me, I'd be grabbing the hacksaw, firing up the disc sander, and digging out my drill, valve grinding compound, and brass screws   Your sanity and your rifle are both better off with your plan. My sanity is not a factor when I take on something like that, my family will testify.
Seriously, I do suspect the actual crown more than the internal pitting, but I'd never be happy with that in there.
Please let us know how the hunt goes, and give us an update after the workover!

Gotcha, makes sense to me Mike. Heck, 3/8"s should have it back to new..

Yes, and I used On Target PC program and the actual size minus bore is .898"

Great group Mike.
I know what you like to get but for now this will work.

Yes FOTIS, but I will by the end of spring and you are right, this will do for now.
