First I am not a speed freak, I know a 180 gr bullet out of a 30-06 will kill about anything. However, I always like to try and load to optimum performance. I am not experienced with the 180's in the 30-06. What velocity should I try to shoot for to load the 180 E Tips in my 24 inch tube 30-06? Powders I plan to try are Staball 6.5, H4350, IMR 4451, possibly RL23.

With Nosler Partitions, 2800 fps works fine using H4350, from my Remington with a 24" barrel.

The E-Tips throw an unknown into it for me though. They're different and I've done little load development with them.

Perhaps Dr Mike or someone can run a quickload?

If it were me and you wanted to use the E-tip, I would step down a notch to the 168 gr. E-tip. You will be able to load it a bit faster which will in turn make it more effective at longer distances. The E-tips don't lose much weight so you can use a lighter bullet and expect a lot better penetration than a bonded or cup & core bullet. At least in my experience.

My son shoots 90 gr. E-tips in his 6mm Remington and he's taken a few antelope, a nice mule deer buck, and a large cow elk at 350 yards. All were one shot kills. The bullet on his elk exited her off side right in the middle of her shoulder. Pretty impressive.

Powder choices look good. I'd include IMR4350 in the mix.

Thank you all. I suppose I am showing my ignorance with the all copper bullets. Just started to mess with them here recently (trying to broaden horizons) and my lack of knowledge is evident.

I've enjoyed great success with monolithic bullets for quite a few years. I used the 168 gr TSX in my 300 WSM to take moose, elk, mule deer, whitetail and black bear. All the animals expired pretty much as I had hoped. My "go to" load for my 270 WSM launches a 130 grain E-Tip. That load/rifle combination has accounted for moose, elk, mule deer and black bear. Again, all managed to tip over as expected. I like the monolithic bullets. The E-Tip has worked very well for me in a variety of rifles. A 180 grain E-Tip at 2800-2900 fps from your 30-06 would be a formidable load for about anything you'd care to hunt. I doubt that it would kill any more effectively than would the 168 grain E-Tip sent on its way at 2900-3000 fps.

I'm glad that the 168 E-Tip was included in the Quick Load, and also referenced by "6mm Rem" because I've got 200 of them on hand. I figured that it would be easy enough to get them to 2,800 fps. They're long, have a high BC, and should penetrate quite well.

After attempting to load the 140 gr TTSX in 7-08 and now the 180 Etip in the 30-06 I am learning that I should probably go to mid weight bullet compared to the heavier for caliber side of bullets.

The question needs more detail.

180 E tip, 3006, what range?

We typically shoot deer 50-400 yards.

At 500 yards, it’s probably down to 2000 FPS. You’ll have minimal expansion.

That 180 etip, I’d leave to magnums.
From a 3006, I’d drive it as fast as I can and keep the range under 300. Part of that is we need blood track in heavy cover to recover deer where I hunt.

Going down a step on monos help as you can get the speed up more.

The final thing I’d bring up on monolithic bullets, they are longer and push into your case more and they some times need more twist to stabilize.

I’d guess you’d be ok with a 1:10.

If your 3006 is older, it could be a 1:12 twist. A lighter bullet stabilizes better with slower twist rates.

All comments above are excellent.

You should be fine with the etip at the ranges your shooting.
I’d recommend the 165 over the 180, but if you have the 180... use it. If it doesn’t stabilize well, give it more jump.

On the opposite end of the monos, are the Long range and extreme distance bullets are designed to expand at low speeds...

The trade off is if it opens fully at 700-1000 yards, the energy the bullet has at 25 could result is the bullet splatting and not penetrating.

There was a really educational bullet test one of the members who guides provided. They took 6 elk. Two with Berger’s, two with ELD-X, and two with AccuBond.

If you have time ... try to find it. I think it was under bullet tests vs hunting. He provided pictures of recovered bullets and explained the observed game behavior after impact.

For deer at those ranges I would go with 150 E-Tips. You can push them faster and it will penetrate. I have used 150's on deer and elk out 400 yards with no problems.

AFAIK, the only 30-06 rifles with 1 in 12" twist barrels are the Browning 78 and Husqvarna according to the Speer #9 Manual. I have one FN Mauser with a 1 in 12" barrel but its a custom job. It's quite accurate with the 165 gr. AccuBond bit will not shoot and 180 gr. spitzer into anything smaller than 4 inches. I also have a Husqvarna 640 in 30-06 that apparently, according to the Speer manual has a 1 in 12" twist. In theory, a 1 in 12" should stabilize a 180 gr. bullet but nothing heavier. My custom will do 1.5" with the 220 gr. Sierra round nose bullets. I'll have to try some 180 round nose I have on hand to see what they'll do. I'll run some 180 gr. spitzers and round nose in the Husky and see what the results might be.

On 180 gr. bullets I have run some Hornady Interlocks to 2800 FPS in a Remington M700 BDL and 700 Classic, 22" barrel with no apparent pressure signs in either rifle. This was during early summer with temps in the mid 90s for whatever that's worth. Figured I might use it on my next elk hunt. Would have alternated between the BDL and my custom .280 Rem. from day to day. The hunt didn't happen. Vehicle accidents two days before the hunt and five days in the hospital got in the way.
