But this one is in a Winchester M70 classic! Found it in the local paper this week. The guy says he bought it new in the mid 90's and had only been fired five times. I really like it. So now I have a tough choice to make. I now have a Mark V and a M70 in 270 Weatherby, and am only going to keep one. The weatherby shoots well, but is 9.5 lbs scoped up. The Winchester is lighter by a pound, and might have a slight edge in the looks department. Both are pretty good looking rifles IMO. So I think it will come down to the one that shoots the best gets to stay in the safe.

I did the barrel break in today with some 130 BT, and 74.5 gr 7828 ssc. Nothing spectacular with that load, 1-1.5" I'll load up some 140 Bts and AB with RL-22, 7828, and RL-25 and see what I can get. I'm really like what a 140 AB looks like on paper doing 3250+. Hopefully I can get .75" or better groups with that speed.

Pics coming soon!

Nice, sounds like a good plan to keep the one that shoots best. Didn't realize the Weatherby would be that heavy.

I've seen a push feed M70 in .270 Weatherby, but if I would have seen a CRF model, I would now own it.

If you decide to keep the Mk. V, let me know, I may want to pick up the Winchester from you.

Thanks guys. I'm pretty excited to give it a good work out. Rl-25 and 7828ssc will be first up with the 140 bt. I'm out of rl-22 (the 280ai got the last of it), so it will be a week or so before i can get a test with it. Just going to load them all .010"off and in one grain increments to start out. Then I'll come back and play around with the ones that show potential.

Your not kidding! I found my wife that way as well. If this rifle works out half as good as my wife is, it's going to be by my side for a long time.

VERY NICE Jake! That Model 70 is SHARP!!! Man, that would have been hard for me to pass up as well. Hope it shoots for you. That is a great looking rifle.

Now you're talking, Jake. Seriously handsome rifle, that's for sure. Your load development will be interesting. Out of curiosity, what's the freebore on the Winchester? Just wondering if they maintained what Weatherby dictated in their own rifles?

I found a good load with the Re22 for mine, but the velocity is 200 fps slower than the IMR 7828. This is with the 140 grain bt. I can chrony the 140's at 3400 fps with the 7828, with no pressure signs at all, and very accurate. The best that I can do with the RE22 is just over 3200, and then it starts to get hot. I have a couple hundred loaded with the RE22, and as soon as they are gone, I will be sticking with the IMR 7828. Elk deer or moose isn't going to be able to tell which load put it in the freezer.Good luck on your endevours.

I'm going to say yes to the Weatherby free bore on the M70. With a 140 BT, the lands barely shove the bullet into the case enough to hold it.

I tried some 7828 this morning. I didn't get my chrony set up as it was windy enough to blow it over. I didn't hit max in my gun yet, I loaded up 70, 71, and 72gr. I loaded them @ 3.303", I think I'm just going to load them at max mag lenght and try RL-22 next. I got a new jug today. I'm going to keep working with the 140 BT until I get a bit more familiar with things, then I'll try the 140 AB, and the powder that showed the most promise with the 140 BT.

Sure is purty. Nice find Jake!

It makes sense that Win would set their version up like Wthby does as far as freebore goes.

Hope it comes along quick Jake. Is the Model 70 Floated or glassed? I am thinking it wouldn't be a bad idea to get it tuned up before you get too far with load work. It turned the 264WM into a very stable shooter. I don't see you having much trouble getting your wants out of that rifle. My 264 runs the 140's into the 3180 range with the 140 BT's and a touch over 3200 with the 140 AB. Your 270 should do that and then some.
