Picked up another Whelen

My wife and I had been in Iowa visiting her family and stopped at a Scheel's sporting goods store on the trip home.

On one rack in the used rifle section I found an immaculate Remington 700 Classic in 35 Whelen but since I already have one it was just eye candy for me. However, down on a bottom rack was a Remington 7600 pump in, you guessed it, also a Whelen! I pondered for a while but it, too, was in great condition (I would rate it 95-98%) so I decided I would bring it home. It doesn't have a scope on it (yet) but did have a Weaver style base and original iron sights.

If things go well and there are no accuracy issues, I may very well have found one of my rifles to be in hand for this deer season.

That is a great snag, Ron. Congratulations. I've seen several of the 7600s that could really give some enviable groups. I don't recall any that didn't give acceptable accuracy.

Nice grab Ron. I like those 7600's and in a Whelen, that would be very cool. Being from the NE, the 7600 was the rifle to own back when I was a kid. Reliable and accurate. I would have one in a Whelen, just because.

Scotty, after seeing how effective the Whelen/AccuBond combo can be on deer sized animals this past season, I am thinking this would be a gun that would adapt well to timber hunting as well as some open fields. Additionally, I had the opportunity to try mine out on some coyotes and they were impressed too, I think.

In a survey of coyotes, seven out of ten spoke quite negatively about the Whelen.

Dang you guys and your whelens! Why I need/want one is beyond me!

It is so terribly lonely when you're the last one w/o a Whelen.

Mike, mine didn't say anything they just laid there.......and bled.......a LOT

280, I was much like you figuring why do I need another caliber, etc.? But, I got my first one (after much enabling by Dr. Mike, Scotty, and others) as my birthday present to me. After my oldest stepson whacked a button buck with mine at a lasered 447 yards I realized it was much more than a moderate range cartridge with the appropriate bullets. It is very easy to load for; I tried the Accubonds, Sierra 225's and Hornady Flextip 200's finding ALL would shoot under an inch in my rifle. Imagine what it could do with a LRAB.......just saying

And saying it quite well, I might add.

Mike (280 Rem), the Whelen is calling you. C'mon, you got a 264 coming, get the Whelen and you've got the cool calibers...

And the pressure on Mike just keeps mounting. Come on over to the dark side, Mike. Don't resist; give in.

I'm so scope poor right now, it would not behoove me to get another rifle and be deeper in scope poorness.....LOL

behoove schmeehoove. You need a Whelen. You know it, we know it. The only question is when you will allow the natural course of events to occur.

Tom, I am amazed at your tenacity, to say nothing of your aggressiveness! Go get 'em!

I'm glad no one is harping on me about having the cool calibers. I'd be in trouble. But Tom I think your missing one. Either a 280 or Ackley version!!!

Hmmm....

Despite the grief I'll take from 280 Rem, I would agree, the 280 is pretty cool. But Mike (280 Rem) still needs a Whelen. We can't lose focus.

:)

I learn from the masters.

:)

Also- I know Mike well enough to give him a little grief. He'd do no less for me in return.

Glad he's trying to redirect for me................................

Well, yes, Tom, the .280 is a necessity in the arsenal of any true rifle crank.
