Rem 700 is my favorite action to build on.

My smith shares the same opinion. He was glad when I went from a M70 to a 700. Thinks I will be happier with the way it shoots. And a guy can find parts scattered all over in every shape and color for a 700.

Have you shot it yet Fotis?

Blasphemy... This guy needs to be banned. Raising all kinds of ruckus and hate!

Just busting on you Jake.

Sorry Scottie but I agree.

The 700 is THE platform to build on.

Although I love Winchesters given the choice I will always build on a 700.

With what a Remington costs, I would rather just spend the money on a custom action like a BAT Or Lawton and pay for the machining up front. Too many have told me that buy the time the machine work is done, you come out ahead

But yep, I am with you Fotis, the 700's are great platforms. I just like the 70's.

I am not a fan of Remington actions. I realise that most highly accurate benchrest guns are built on Remington actions. No prejudice on my part and I have owned 9-10 Remingtons ranging from Model 721, 722, 725, 700, 600, 788 et cetera but I never have cared for the design and bedding of the recoil lug on these actions. I really liked the early (pre 700) rifles that I had quite a bit, particularly the Model 725 .30-06 that I had.

However personally, I would rather have a Model 70 or FN Mauser type flat bottomed action to work with for bedding and certainly for glass bedding. Plus, I really like the claw extraction (controlled round feeding) system in the Winchester and even, to a lesser extent, the Mauser, Sako style actions. I have never cared for the plunger pin extractor.

I think you are spot-on with this statement Scott. You are counting on a gunsmith to be able to "correct" the machining tolorences that Remington has with their actions. Good gunsmiths will be able to do that for a price. The custom action manufacturers such as Bat, Borden, Defiance, etc... build them correctly to start with. In most cases you have choices on the type of extractor you want, intregal rails and a host of other features that will bring the cost of the 700 action up to the same price as a custom. I equate it to a bicycle that is built for casual riding that you decide to turn into a racing bike. You can replace all the cheaper components from derailers, tires, wheels, pedals, etc...like a real racing bike has, but at the end of the day you still have a heavy touring bike frame that wasn't meant for racing. If you want a custom rifle built for LR hunting or competitive matches, start with a good action that takes most of the problems with bolt faces, raceways and squareness out of the equation.

For my "normal" hunting rifles, I don't need to spend $1200 on an action...the benefits don't outweigh the cost. If I want a LR rifle to shoot for hunting or competitions, I can justify the cost.
