I hope to go after elk this fall, and having a dilemma with choosing the rifle to use...
First up is my newly acquired 7mm RUM. Or a 300 RUM, 7mm Wby or 375H&H. Not necessarily in that order ;-)

Any of them will do the job. If it has the potential for a long range shot the .375 H&H may not be the best. I would use the gun your most comfortable with and is the most accurate.

I agree with IdahoCTD. I would take them all out to the range. Hopefully you have a spot where you can shoot from field positions. I would take the one or two that you shoot the best at the ranges you expect to shoot. Good luck with your hunt.

They will all get the job done.
The 7mm RUM with the 160 gr AB would be a flat liner elk round.

I am thinking the same thing JD338. What was your load again? You used Retumbo I believe.

93.0 grs Retumbo
Work up, the 7mm RUM can pressure spike quickly.

Where are you heading for Elk this fall boomer? That 7mm RUM truly is a laser. A buddy either 2 or 3 years ago had one sticking his tongue out at over 350 and he shot I blinked and he was down .
Remember range reports with photos are always well received :).

Blessings,
Dan

I like the .300 Rum for elk also, especially if you are going to be hunting mature bull elk.

Hard to beat any of those choices. I'm a fan of the RUMs and have a 300 RUM that is one heck of a shooter. Always wanted a 7mm RUM since they shoot like a laser.

Best rifle is the one you shoot the best and are comfortable with, any of those listed are Elk killers.
I must agree with WC, I'm partial to the RUM's as well. Bullet placement is key no matter the gun.

Yes, all are adequate, but my choice would be the .300RUM, pushing
either a 180 or 200 grain AB or the always dependable Partition  8) !

Enjoy your elk hunt!
