Pondering

Just some late night pondering.
Thinking about a 25-06 and 35 Whelen for a two gun combo for North American hunting.

I'd likely keep the model 70 .338 Win Mag and drop it in a McMillan and use 185 grain bullets for the longer stuff.

What you all think?

That'd do. There's a lot of room between the .25s and the .35s....

I'd be more apt to go with the .270/.280 and a .35 Whelen. Not so sure the .338WM gives you more than the .35 in the field....or more range than the .270/.280.

Of course, I'm a little biased. I can't imagine any N. American battery not including at least one .30 cal

Yeah, I'm leaning the same way. :)

While both are good choices neither give you 400+ yard elk rifle. A 30 Caliber for those long shots is necessary. And while pondering, why a 25?, change it for a 22 for Varmints and you have got it made. Now your done, if you want to keep the 338, just sell everything else and get an AR- and your done and happy. Problem solved (y) (y) (y) (y)

Although those are great choices, there is over lap with the 35 Whelen and the 338 Win Mag.
What about the 25-06 and either a 7mm or 30 cal? 280AI or 30-06/300 Win Mag.Then you can run 225-250 gr bullets in the 338 Win Mag and have everything covered.

Bill also makes a valid point.

Makes sense to me. Had the same idea plenty of times but never stuck.........

"Take the cannoli, leave the gun", ha. Nothing wrong with your choices. However, ream that
Whelen out to the Ackley or Brown Whelen and you can eliminate the 338WM. I was amazed at how good it killed ( I couldn't tell any difference on plains game between my Whelen AI (250X@2600, 200X@2970) and the 300WM, 338, 340, 375H&H! I made a 347yd shot on a Black wildebeest with the 200X, 5X, sighted +2"@100. I just held on his back line and when the herd "finally" stopped jostling, I popped him, complete penetration, hew ran maybe 10yds. I get 2424fps ( lots of factory 375H&H ammo only get 2400-2450fps with the 300, including Kynoch!) with my 310 Woodleigh/R15 load...all this in a 22" barrel and a light rifle. So...as long as you have a Whelen, standard or Improved, everything else is just a 'fun gun", ha.

I pondered such things once. I was able to sleep it off, though. Vince, if building a NA combo, I'm inclined to choose something a little larger than the 25-06 as a light rifle. Something 30 caliber, as has been suggested by others, makes a lot of sense. I do like the .280, but a .30 caliber is hard to beat.

I'll have to pull my AR out of mothballs. :)

That's a combo I'd not considered Bill. My financial advisor, SWMBO, thanks you and loves you.
