So, as some of you know, I'll be headed out to SD this spring to hunt turkeys. I've been checking out different varmint forums, and it seems the dogs are already out and about. Anyone been on a dog hunt? I have been thinking about taking my 22-250 with me when I go. Any tips would be appreciated.

For sure, the 22-250 will be the rifle to have with you for PD. Take a good supply of ammunition.

I have used the following on Wyoming Prairie dingos.
22 LR
17 HMR
22 Mag
204 ruger

22 Hornet
223
17 Rem
22-250
220 swift
and 6mm rem

All worked great! but due to the fact that you do not want to limit yourself when range becomes a factor then the 22-250.

If you know you will have 300 yards or less the 223 would do all day long.

Out of the aforementioned the ones in red I still own, problem is All my spots have been poisoned!!!!!!!!!! :(

Where will you be turkey hunting at? There are a couple different ways to go with shooting p-dogs in SD. You can buy a license that cost around $15 dollars to shoot on any public or private land, or you can shoot on Tribal lands which you need a special permit from whatever tribal land you are shooting on. I have a ranch NW or Mobridge that I shoot on, so it just requires the normal SD non-resident license to be able to create red mist  .

Your 22-250 will be great...two would be better if you are in towns that have a lot of activity and haven't been shot at much. I am not surprised the dogs are out with the mild winter we have had in the Northern states this year.

BTW...this is addictive and will force many on this forum with large bore "scores" to see that number drop when they have to start buying centerfire .22 rifles :p .

Dad and his hunting buddy hit South Dakota every fall for pheasant hunting. Dad is 84 now and only walks after the birds for a couple of days so he also spends a day there shooting prairie dogs with his .22-250 Rem 700. Enjoys the heck out of both the pheasant hunting and the prairie dog shooting!

Have you got a portable bench you can haul along? They're not that expensive to build if you don't have one. A three-legged bench will steady itself, although it may not be very level, depending on terrain.

I'm hunting in the Black Hills. My first time out. Turkey hunting will be my main focus, but figured wacking some varmints would be fun too. The SD game site states that all long as you have a license for anything, then you can hunt dogs too!

No bench. I like to shoot from my bipod whenever possible.
