I have been doing battle with my 338 WM and the 225 AB for years trying to get it to shoot under the 1" mark on a regular basis. I found a load with RL-17 that would get me right around 1", and has done so several times. I got a new can of RL-17, and some more 225 ABs this week so I decided to run some tests.

I loaded 14 rounds up with 68.5 RL-17 and a 225 AB @ 3.360 and Fed 215M primers
Loaded 3 of the same thing with WRLM primers.
And three more of the same thing with CCI mag primers.

The 215 load typically clips along at 2830 fps. Nothing that is going to set any land speed records, but capable of running down any critter I point it at. I'll take it, even @ 1". But
I had to try to do better, and I had a few different primers laying around.

I also cleaned the everliving crap out fo the barrel before I went out. I'm talking a few applications of JB compound, and some CR-10, and a bunch of elbow grease!

After two foulers with the 215, I got a nice 1" 3 shot group.
I switched to the CCIs, and things got worse!
Next up was the WLRM, things got better, about .5" better! I got a nice three shot group that will be right close to .5"

I used the rest of the 215 rounds to play with the Limbsaver barrel Deressinator (sp?) I started @ 1/2" from the forend of the stock and shot a three shot gourp, moved it out to .75" and shot a three shot group, then moved it out to 1" and shot another three shot group. I won't put these pics up, but the groups gots worse the closer the "rubber" was to the stock. None of the groups in this case were better than the groups shot without it. The only group of the day that was shot without it that was worse was the CCI group.

All in all I'm freaking stroked about the group I got with the WLRM. I'll load a few more and try to repeat it to make sure. This has happened to me before, I got all excited about a load, then could never get it to happen again. This time MIGHT be different.

I'll get some pics up here soon, the bear meatloaf experiment is about done!

This is with the WLRM.

This is with the 215. The third is either in the same hole as the middle shot (very bottom is a fouler) or just off Tue page. Either way it tiht around an inch.

Here was the cci

That is always really great when a small change makes such a big difference. Glad it worked out for you.

Jake,

Nice work. Way to stay at it and make it happen.
You da man!

Sometimes it just takes foreverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, hope it does it again. Good luck.

Jake I'm going to load my boys 300 WSM some more. I might have to try changing primers also to see what happens. I did get a 3/4" group with one load, but velocity was not what I was hoping for. Might try some more powders also to see what happens. It wasn't super fast but I guess his cow elk thought both the grouping and the velocity were sufficient because she dropped on the spot. Hitting the bottom of the spine on the way through will have that effect though! :)

You know.... I never really have an issue with primers... maybe that's because I usually start with a WLRM. Never have less than 1000 of them on my bench, I even use them in my 105 Amax load for the .243.

I just went through this. Changing primers can in fact increase or decrease a group for a certain load.

Now I hope it does in fact duplicate it for you. If you can, try and shoot again when mother nature is doing the same thing it was on this day or atleast close to it.

Jake,

Good work. You're picking up some valuable information. It is fascinating to see the major differences arising from small changes.

Sounds promising. Let us know how it works out on the next range session. I havn't tried the WLRMs but I have had good results with the WLR primers in most calibers.

Great shooting Jake. Way to stick with the 338 buddy. Seems like you have some great shooting loads now.. It is almost in Whelen territory!

David, you gotta try RL19... I can't see you going wrong with it.. It works fantastic in mine and Nosler's rifles..

Jake,
Nice shooting. Way to stick with it. I admire you for going crazy with the barrel cleaning. I know I'm anal about it with my guns. I changed a few things in my load development that really helped with my 300 RUM. I changed from RCBS Dies to a Forester Bench rest die set. The bullet Seating Die is incredible. I changed to Lyman VLD reamer and Camfer tools for all my brass prep. Results are the groups got tighter.

Your doing well, keep at it.

Don

Good to see the positive change. I couldn't get my 6.5 Creedmoor shooting well with 140 grain bullets until I went to CCI BR2 primers.

Primer changes do make a difference indeed, and good to see the improvement.
