Problem with winchester ammo

I recently purchased a factory box of winchester super-x 7mm wsm for breaking my barrel in. The first round I fired practically locked my bolt, It took a lot of force to get the action open. The case had leaked gas all over the primer and head. Worse my new savage rifles extractor took some damage! I called winchester and they said they would investigate, but nothing has come of it. What should I do? :(

Certainly, avoid using that box of ammo. Every company has at one time or another had a lot of ammo that required recall. On the whole, this is the exception rather than the rule, fortunately. Recently, a box of Federal 300 WSM ammo I used for a break-in proved to be overly hot. We carefully worked through the problem, first ensuring that this was not a problem arising from the action of the custom rifle. However, we were able to demonstrate conclusively that the problem was that particular lot of ammo.

Most companies will welcome the report from the field and attempt to find the source of and correction for the problem. I should expect that Winchester will make an effort to at the least reimburse you whatever loss you may have incurred. Give them a little time to complete their investigation. If you haven't heard from them in a reasonable amount of time, you would be well within your rights to enquire about the status of your concern.

Let me know what you find. I just bought a new Savage in 22-250 and with ammo I used in my Rem 22-250 I broke the extracter and jammed the ejector so it had to be drilled out. My loads were well below max. I know a 270 Savage I had had a real tight chamber and gave me instant overpressure loads. I called Savage an they said to start lower and work up slowly. I did and it worked. My velocities were higher than the loads called for in the manuals..You might call Savage, they were very willing to help.

I'll talk to savage on monday. I fired federal fusion ammunition after to ensure it wasn't the rifle. There were no signs of high pressure or excess pressure required to open the bolt.
