Project 300 ack. mag.

Opened up the 8lb jug of H1000 to start real testing and final load development today. I'll be running the 168gr at 3300fps. This is as Hot as I want to go and not burn through Brass. Which is right at 86.5gr, So that is what my first test is with the new lot. It will be interesting to see if H1000 is consistent between Lots. Old lot was 2009 new is 2014 dated.

I'd drop a few grains. The newer lots of H-1000 seems to be faster (ie less powder for the same velocity). It looks pretty good so far. Now the long wait for hunting season.

New lot of H1000 is exactly the same as old lot for Velocity. A few updates, It is a 1-12" twist barrel. Testing at 250 yards, The longest range I have out of the wind. Is showing it likes the Lighter bullets. 100yrd groups where looking OK with the 168gr but at 250 they fell apart. I have another batch ready for testing. The 150gr Ballistic tip over 85gr of IMR7828 is 3500fps, at 250yrds it has given the best group. The 165gr Ballistic tip are grouping better than the 168gr. Unless I run the Pressure up on the 168gr into short brass life territory. Still have not found any RE33 or Retumbo to test. I have 100 fire formed brass, resizing is by setting a standard 300 weatherby die to not bump the shoulder. This is working very well but it sizes down the body of case more than needed for the 300 Ackley magnum chamber. Not enough to justify $300 plus for a custom sizing die. The 300 weatherby Seating die works exactly like it would for a 300 weatherby. No custom seating die is required. I even taper crimped a few bullets for a test. I mounted a 6-18x44 Vortex on it after 250yrd testing proved the 3-9x40 inadequate

Cabelas has 1 and 8# containers of RE33 available. Powdervalley has 8# kegs. Just have to eat the hazmat fee.

After a couple more range trips 150gr Ballistic tips at 3500fps have given the best groups at 250 yards. I need to have someone with steady hands run a few groups with it to really test how accurate it can be. I had a couple groups under 1" at 250

Was wondering if you could send a couple of fired cases to PTG or Clymer and have them make you a reamer and open up the Lyman dies you already have.

Man, that thing is a laser beam.. I am not sure if I could shooting better than under an 1" at 250.. Pretty sure your getting everything that's there!

Finally found 2 pounds of Retumbo. Did a little pre load capacity check. with 168gr Ballistic tips or 180gr Protected Point Partitions, a Case will hold up to 88.5 grains without excessive compression. It will be interesting to see if Velocity's equal H1000

Very nice! I dig what you've done with the cartridge.

I'm a sucker for a cool 300 magnum!
