Oh man, that is some impressive speeds for the 168 gr ABLR.
She is going to shoot flatter than road kill.

Jim, check out the other thread where Mike ran the numbers on the 7mm WSM and 168 ABLR's.... It is very impressive with the 168's. I know mine is humping the 168's along at 3100 and I thought my chrono was monkied up.

OK, as the other 7mm Wby guy around here I have a couple of questions.

First, on a previous version of the ABLR web page they recommend a faster twist than 1 in 10. However, I've heard that speed can make up for twist, so can the 7mm Wby really stabliize a 168gr ABLR bullet?

Second, as I look at the QL data the really fast, sexy loads are all compressed. Is there any harm to jamming 77.5gr of Retumbo in there and smashing it down? I get the smallest bit of compression with what I currently load, and can often get rid of that if I tap the case several times before seating the bullet. Jamming in 8.8% more powder seems like a lot to me, so I thought I'd ask.

Patrick

Patrick,

So long as you are not actually crushing the granules, there is no degradation of performance in a compressed load. The deterrent should not be significantly crushed. Effectively, this means that for many stick powders, 110% case fill is easily obtainable without degradation of burn rates.

Mike,

Another silly question - how do you know if they are being crushed? It is obvious?
It seems to me that if you're compressing them you're going to be crushing them, but...

Patrick,

I count crushing as when I can hear the "crunching" of the granules and when I can feel the crushing. My rough calculation is that a 114% case fill is a severely compressed load. Generally, a 110% case fill is compressed, but not crush. These figures generally hold for stick powders; ball powders change the equation due to their shape. To compress without crushing, I use a long drop tube to fill the case. If it is severely compressed, I will leave the drop tube or funnel in place and gently tap the side of the case with a glass rod to settle the granules. A brass rod or a silver spoon will work equally well for this purpose. This is only to eliminate any possibility of sparking. Alternatively, I sometimes place the bullet in the top to block the case and tap the side. The point is to settle the granules without spilling what has been weighed out.

OK, sounds like your techniques are similar to what I do. I'll have to see if I get around to trying the 168; I'd have to find some first.

Any thoughts on the twist rate?

Patrick

I run the 1-9.5 and have done well with the 168's Patrick, sorry I can't help with the 168's but no way to find out other than trying a few. Shoot me long and see if they hold up. Are Weatherby 7mms 1-10"?

Yes, Weatherbys are 1 in 10. Yet, they stabilize the 175 grain factory loads just fine.
However, at the cost/rarity of the 168 ABLR I don't really want to waste them if they won't work anyway.

Yeah, the 168's are long pills. You might do just fine though. Wished I was at home to measure them for you. It might give you an idea if it's even worth the shot.
