No kidding! HA! The 257 Ackley is a ripper. Heck, to be honest the plain old 257 isn't going to lag too awfully much loaded to the same PSI's. Sounds like a cool set up.

I like my Bob. It is almost criminal that I haven't shot it more than I have. It is sweet to shoot and manages to handle deer quite nicely.
 
Thanks Dr Mike... I am pleasantly surprised with those numbers.
Working up for a Colorado Mule deer hunt this fall. So should I start with velocity and pressure workup and then go to the Berger recommended OAL tests?

My approach is to settle on a rough OAL. If restricted by magazine, then that will be the maximum and I will adjust charge to obtain the accuracy desired. If magazine is not restrictive, then I will set (for a cup-and-core bullet, such as the Berger) at 0.010 inch off the lands and look for accuracy as demonstrated by standard deviation. When a good load is demonstrated, I can play with seating depth if necessary. Works for me (and has for quite a few years).

I am running the 115 gr BT with RL22 in my M700 Classic 24" barrel long action and getting 3100 fps.

Sue now has her own rifle, a Nosler M48 in 280AI. And she is pretty good with it at 600 yards.
She will be shooting it at 800 yards this spring and getting ready for WY Antelope this fall.

As for the 257 Roberts, I used it last fall to take a big 8 pt in the UP of MI.
Ya just gotta love those Quarter Bores! (y)

No worries... thanks to all of you that use your time and expertise to help out with our QL and all other questions reloading related. I have reloaded my own ammo for close to 15 years, and have learned more in the last 18 months hanging out here.. I definitely do a few things different now.

Ed, am late to this thread - but can tell you via my .25-06 experience, that either the 115 gr Berger VLD or the 115 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip are seriously good bullets for mule deer.

I hunted with the 115 Bergers for a while, loaded to 3190 fps, and dropped three mule deer, at 175, 230 and 400 yards. Each dropped instantly. On the 175 yard shot, I deliberately targeted the shoulder blade. The bullet went through both shoulder blades, wrecked everything in between, and I found the remnants of the bullet just under the off-side hide. This was on a young 3x3 mule deer buck. Instant drop & death of course.

Switched back to "my" Noslers and am getting better penetration, often exits even on large mule deer bucks.

Nearly equal accuracy, with my rifle doing slightly better with the Bergers. Both bullets kill very quickly, usually instantly. More penetration with the Nosler Ballistic Tips.

I did have to reduce my powder charge a bit when swapping to the 115 Ballistic Tips from the 115 Bergers, was getting some pressure signs. No problem, I just ran the BT's at 3120 fps, and they do fine. That's very similar to the velocities achieved by the .257 Roberts and the AI version as well. I zeroed the rifle at 300 yards, and actually held right on the back of the mule deer I killed at 400 yards. Bullet dropped very nicely right into the heart/lung area.
