If someone can figure out how to do it I'd like to see the case capacity difference between a 6.5x47 Lapua and the same case with the 40 degree shoulder and the shoulder moved forward .030". I'm thinking it's going to be around 5% or 2.5grs.

I like the 6.5x47L case because of the small primer and it's tough. Fitting in a short action is a breeze for it as well. The big 6.5mm bullets are long and won't work at optimal length through a short action when the cases are .260 Remington length. Even Creedmoor's are too long for standard Remington SA's with bullets seated way out there. For example: I just set a 140 Amax on a 6.5x47L case and it measured 3.070" (with the boattail in the neck) so if the neck length was .270 for the improved the overall length would be 2.80" A Remington SA is 2.88" long so there is plenty of room but a Creedmoor case is .070" longer which would put it at 2.87" or only .010" of clearance. Berger's are even longer so now your seating bullets down in the case losing capacity or installing a Wyatt mag box (I'm not a big fan of AI mags). 6.5x47's can usually get 140's to 2800fps and I think a improved case would push that closer to 2900fps. Then playing with a stepped throat might knock on 3000fps. Now your in 6.5x284 velocity with a much smaller case that actually fits easily in a short action. In reality I was thinking about getting standard 6.5x47 velocity (26" barrel) from a 20" barrel to use a can on for hunting. I already have a unfired 6.5x47 on a Rem. 700 SS with #5 Krieger barreled that is 24" long. I intend to cut to 20" if I get the improved reamer.

I've been playing with wildcats for nearly 25 years so one more is always a good thing. I've got a 7-338 Norma Imp in the works and will try to finish up my 6.5x68 Imp reamer prints before too long so I now need something else to think about. I thought about a 6.5-338 Norma Imp but I might wait a bit to see if Berger will come out with the 155gr VLD that I talked to Bob Beck about. I've done hot rodded .30 calibers every way you can and with the 7-338 Norma Imp I might do a 7-338 Lapua Imp since a customer is interested in one. That doesn't leave me much to do for the mid bore calibers unless I go to smaller case sizes.

Here is what I have in 6.5mm's, 7mm's and .308 calibers.
6.5's - 2 6.5x47L, 6.5x284, 6.5saum, and 2 6.5-300wm's with a 6.5x68 Imp in the works
7mm - 2 .284's, 2 7-300wm's, 2 7STW's with a 7-338 Norma Imp in the works
.30 - .308, .300wm, 2 30-8mm, 308 Baer, 2 30-338 Norma Imp, 30-378 Imp, 30-338 Lapua Imp

I also have 2 338 Baer's and a 338 Edge that are really accurate but I don't enjoy shooting them as much as the .30 caliber and smaller guns (like you experienced). So if I stay .30 caliber and smaller I'm running out of stuff to build . My kids are starting to get older also so I'm somewhat looking ahead at what I want to build them when they are old enough to shoot something bigger than a .22. A 6-204 Ruger might be in the cards over the next couple years for them too.

Wow, you must have at least two gun safes for all those, I don't know how you find time to shoot them all. lol You're right though about the length issues in a SA, I was just thinking of maximum velocity in a 308 sized case and the 6.5 SLR seemed like the ticket. I was thinking of it for my own 260 Remington that will someday need to be re-barreled, and all the brass I have for could be reused, but so could all the brass I have in 6.5x47L too.

Sounds like you could approach those velocities in the longer barrel pretty easily, I forget what I get out of mine w/a 24" bbl. and I'm using 123's. I didn't think it was really possible to get 2800 out of the 6.5x47 with the 140's?

Most guys get 2800+ out of 140's with 26+" barrels in a 6.5x47l but with H4350 the powder is crunching so it needs a bit more capacity. I'm shooting 2960 with 123's in a 26" barrel and it's crunching too. I think most people run the 6.5x47 hot to get those velocities but they are accurate there most of the time.

The SLR would be a good one if you don't mind seating bullets a little deeper. I do think the 6.5x47 case is a bit more accurate.

I do have two large safes stuffed full. I really need another one since I have several more builds in the works and 9 action waiting for barrels. I can't shoot them all and haven't shot a bunch of them for 10+ years. They are like a piggy bank to me. Since I build my own it doesn't cost me nearly as much as the average person and I've been doing it for 23 years. I have 35 rifles with custom barrels so that is only about 1.5 per year even though I build 5+ per year

Nice! From your list of cartridges, and building them yourself, I'd say you are "Way ahead of the curve" Nathan. Your Truck shop must put out some pretty awesome stuff I'd imagine! You remind me of a very good friend of mine, George DeLorean of Leader Automotive and Dart where he just retired from for the last 18+ years.

At one time my turbo kits powered 5 of the top 6 fastest stock body Duramax trucks and several of the top ones still use my stuff. Most of these trucks are 1300+hp and some are over 1500hp. I have a buddy I help a lot that runs a Duramax powered Nova and is building a tube car with a Duramax. I was also the first to ever build a twin turbo kit for Duramax trucks and now there are probably a dozen different shops doing it. I'm about done with diesel stuff. I got tired of everyone stealing my designs/ideas because they couldn't think for themselves and it wasn't much of a challenge anymore. I still have people constantly calling me for advise on turbo sizing and use. The cutting, grinding, and welding thing all day gets old in addition to hanging out under the hood of a truck.

My all time biggest hobby has always been gun building and machining parts so I'm migrating that way more and more by the day. I'll probably end up with my own CNC lathe and mill within the next few months to build guns, gun parts, and truck parts. I have over 30 of my own reamers so building guns for people is a pretty easy venture and I've been shooting long range since the early 90's. I still like driving my 570hp daily driver Duramax and will probably always have a hot rodded diesel with parts I make for it. :mrgreen:

Right now I want to build a boat for duck hunting and fishing and have started making a few models scaled 1" to 1'. I think I have it pretty close to how I want it so I'll probably order some aluminum soon. It will just be a 17-18' 5 degree bottomed jet boat powered by a Seadoo Supercharged engine. They make 185hp, 215hp , 255hp. and the newest is a 260hp (these do nearly 80mph) in the supercharged version. I'm going to use a 185hp version to start (and will probably modify it for more power). We built a couple boats in the late 90's and early 2000's that had 2 stroke 185hp Mercury Sportjet engines in them and took them to the Yukon river in AK moose hunting. The things would do 50mph. After that I want to go full bore into a wake board/surf boat with a hopped up Duramax in it (I have numerous motors, turbos, and parts laying around). If you go to Youtube and look up Pavati boats you'll see a company in southern OR that makes some really nice boats. They are a little out of my price range though at 176k. I've wanted to build a diesel powered boat since the early 2000's when I got into hopping up diesels. The torque destroys parts though and a Hamilton 274 Jet pump to handle some hp was over 12k the last time I checked. The gas motored 212 that is popular in most jet boats is about half that. Who knows maybe I'll get into making CNC'd jet pumps or building aluminum boats. Anything geared around the outdoors and hunting is more my cup of tea.

I don't have cases to measure, so I grabbed these from QL's stock caliber data and 6mmbr thread measurements. It only gained ~.5 of a grain...

Thanks Wyo7200. I want to move the shoulder forward .030" to end up with a .270" neck length too. I was hoping for 2-2.5 grains of increase or about 5%. That should push it up around or over 2900fps. Doing a rough calculation I only got 1.2grs more, for the .030", plus the .5 increase by changing it to 40 degree shoulder. BTW the factory 6.5x47l is a 30 degree shoulder not 34 degrees. I'm not sure I'd get to 2 grains of increase so it might not be worth doing.

What does it show for case capacity on a 6.5 Creedmoor?

54.5 off the top of my head, consistent with my measures hornady cases. I'll redo the calcs in a few hours. QL calculates the angle by the lengths. I don't have my ti-82 calculator anymore so I don't know how exactly. Ql's case capacity is off more often than its right so without actual case measurements, shootin in the dark.

Here's attempt #2. Looks like the shoulder (L1) has to be moved forward .06 to get the 40*. I subtracted .270 from the oal to get the L2 length. Adding from L2 and then adjusting the OAL to be +.270 decreases the capacity by .8 grains.
