Hornady 9th Edition states, "VARGET is out powder of choice with varmint bullets. H4831 & RL-19 worked well with hunting weight bullets."

Maximum loads from the Hornady Manual are:

Accurate 2495 37.3 grains
H4895 38.2 grains
RL-15 41.5 grains
VARGET 40.3 grains
IMR 4064 40.9 grains
Accurate 4350 46.3 grains
IMR 4350 47.7 grains
VIHT N-160 46.0 grains

...Thanks, Dr. Mike, that RL-17 loads is even scarier than Alliant's data. I've got some Varget laying around, I just don't use it or other Hodgdon powders much. Started out w/ IMR, kinda switched over to RL & Western. Western used to be "cheap & easy" around here, haven't seen any new stock in months. Think I'll work up some RL-17 loads for the "toy gun" so if it ever quits snowing sideways I can run out & try 'em...

Nice, that 243WSSM is a screamer! Seems like RL17 is finding it's way into more and more of my loading recently.

It has been looking real good in the 7x57, the 35 Newton and I even loaded a little in the 348 this morning. Seems the same as 4350, just faster with less PSI's.

...thankfully, I put away 10#s whilw I could still find it. It really makes the .325 & 300 WSM's, the .25 WSSM & 6.5 Creedmoor shine. I've never seen the supposed temp problems w/ it, & I've run it from 95* pdawg days to to bitter cool...

It is one of the powders that is very available around here. I just had Woodycreek snag me up 5lbs when I was in school. With the way the Newton uses powder, I should have gotten two jugs..

If it shows up here in the north again, I'll be snagging more RL17 (and RL15) in 5# jugs.

I never should have clicked on this thread. I may keep the new 243 WSSM and Scotty's RL-17  Good luck Gene.

Don't let it disturb you one bit, Brian. Scotty's a big boy; and trained to improvise, adapt and overcome.

Not worried about the powder! Scotty would be surprised trying to get in the mancave  I really need to stop looking at load data and get rid of this new 243 WSSM.

Yes, but the RL17 is just perfect for the 243 WSSM. Now, you don't really want to let it go until you are able to demonstrate how very accurate it can be and what a high stepping cartridge it is.

...I can e-mail you Sierra's .243 WSSM data if you want, Brian. Like I said, mine's a toy rifle, I grabbed it last fall for $250 & slapped a scope on it, bore sighted, 25yds, 200 zero. Let the neighbor (85yr. old Marine) borrow it to fill his deer tag. Nice 3 point mule buck in the garden last day of season. One shot, bang/ flop, not a twitch, pretty impressive. I bought it as a PDawg Self Defense Rifle, cause when's the last time you heard of someone surviving a PDawg attack???
