Well it was an eventful day to say the least. First time I've been to the range in town since shooting in 4-H. The conditions were less than perfect. It rained on me the first 15 minutes I was there was calm for a bit then the wind kicked up to a steady 15 with gusts of 25. To top it off it blew from left to right right to left head wind and a tail wind.

1. Big bores are fun!!!
2. I'm totally impressed with my second project rifle.
3. I've been very disappointed in my 22-250 in the last week.
4. The Swede is frustrating me.

First of all it was a pretty darn good day. I figured out why I missed the coyote and badger with my 22-250 this week. 7 inches low and 6 to the left. So I solved that problem. Had some test loads of CFE 223 loaded up and I think I found the load. 39 gr behind a 55 BT @ 2.400" shot into a 1/4" group shot 3 other lengths and while they were decency nothing great. Also shot 38.5 at the same lengths and 2.400" made a .471" group. Did a jug test with it and got 2 jugs with it all that was left of it was shreds of jacket and a few very small pieces of led this was one of the 38.5's and it clocked at 3809. I had previously fired a ladder with these and both 38.5 and 39 were over 3800.

The Swede was a disappointment. Loaded up some 4350 for it got it resighted in after changing mounts and rings shot one group that was going to be respectable to good and I flubbed the 3rd shot next group was about an inch and a half. Third group I ran into trouble the rifle wouldn't chamber 2 of the rounds. I looked closer and thought well maybe the bullets pulled outta the case. Got home tonight and got my Mic out. Nope right as were labeled on the case as I loaded them. I think this is what the problem is but not 100% sure. Input is welcome. These are all once fired cases. Now on inspection tonight some will chamber some won't. I only neck sized them. If I had a tight chamber would this force me to full length everytime? Just my thoughts.

Now once I ran into problems with the Swede took the Minox and mounted it on the 338. Got it sighted it and cleaned every 3 rounds for 30 then twice after 5 shot groups. I shot 90 rounds out of it today. It turned in several 1" groups and a couple under 1/2" with my fireform loads. Shot 59 215 Sierra GK and 31 250 Barnes Originals. Tried a jug test with the 215's first one went through all seven jugs I had lined up. 2nd went through 6 and got out the side so I lined the last 7 up and it went through them all. I Chronied two 215's one at 2380 the other at 2433. These were all loaded to 50,000 psi according to Hodgon website. Shot a little steel too. It was a very fun day. I even have a functioning shoulder left!!!

A few things I didn't mention in my first post I was at the range from 1000 to 1600. Not a single other person was there all day!! The 22-250 groups I subtracted the bullet diameter out the 338 groups I did not. The 338 group that has three numbers was from a six shot group 5 in the mag one in the pipe. SWEET!!! I measured the two bimodal groups and the group as a whole. All in all a great day.

That is great man. I envy you because with the Wyoming wind I think I will get to the range on April again.

BTW where is the Big bore?

Well to me 338 and up is a big bore. I know what you mean. Today wasn't the best for weather but I made it work.

Ah ok.....

Usually with big bore I am thinking retina detachment 458 lott 416 wby 460 wby, that kind of sick thing

Jake,

You're generating some fine data. It all looks very interesting.

Kinda figured that Fotis. That's the biggest bore I've shot other than muzzleloaders but that's a different game altogether.

Thanks Mike. I can't say it shot too bad considering the conditions and fireforming. I'm pretty excited for load development on this one.

Jake,

I'd say you had a good day with lots of shooting.
I think you should try FL resizing the Swede and see if they will chamber.

Looks good Jake, I am with Jim, bump the shoulders .002" and see what happens, I imagine you will get them to chamber fine. The 6.5 Swede has quite alot of taper to it, so it'll stretch more than other cases will, at least my 7mm Mauser does. Not talking a ton, but it does require some time figuring out how it likes to be sized.

Your 338 is looking great! Way to break that thing in!

Definitely bump the shoulder a bit.

Had you dropped your 22-250? A 55gr at 3800+ is what we in the jet business call, "turnin' n burnin!".

Even though your load was fairly mild, 7 jugs outta those SGKs is quite substantial. Looks like it's going to mature into a shooter. Grats!

Yeah Scotty that was the only thing I could think of after I measured everything after I got back from the range. I'll get it figured out. How do you set dies up just to bump the shoulder. I've never set a set up like that.

I pulled the turrets off my scope one night and reset them so I was reading 0 on my turrets when I was zeroed at 100 yards guess I got distracted. Missed a coyote at 125 yards when its shot a group of .075" at 100. I knew it wasn't the ammo or rifle so it was either me or the scope and I was hesitant at pointing the finger at myself. I also like that 3800. Especially when it was a 1/4" group!

Jake, you need a way of measuring the distance from case head to shoulder. Using a fired case then you can adjust your die till you are getting .002 or thereabouts on each sizing.

I use that Larry Willis gauge set and have used the Hornady Collets.. They all work fine, you just gotta decide which works best for you.

Oh yeah, the turret thing. What I think I need is a "turret stop". Having it set on zero is fine, but doesn't keep me from turning it more than one full turn in either direction beyond the zero mark. Before tricky turrets, I'd screw the caps back on and not have these problems

Amazing how the simple stuff can bite you! Thanks Scotty guess I need more tools. Hopefully I will get a chance to load up some 200AB or 210 PT's this week and do some testing.

Jake sounds like your shooting very well. I sure think that Swede would be a sweet cartridge to play with. An oldie but a goody!
