I just couldn't sit inside today. I really wanted to see what the 338 would do with the 250 AB's and then I wanted to shoot my son's 7mm Mauser with the 160 PT. I took my 264 along as well and also the 300 in order to see if seating depths helped with the consistency.
Anyhow, the 338 shot pretty well, It has really turned a corner since I put the new stock on it. Just seems to lump everything pretty decent.
I started off with 3 foulers of the 250 Sierra GK and 70.5 of RL19. It is my cheap practice load. Not a screamer at all, but decently accurate.
Then I started at 68.5gr's of RL19 with the 250 AB
69 grains 250 AB
69.5 grains 250 AB
70.0 grains 250 AB
The rifle really seems to like the AB. 70gr's ran right at 2600, so looking at the cases and such, I think I have some room to step it up a little. I would really like to get at 2700 or so. Not that I really need it, but I want it...
After that, I decided to shoot up some old 225 AB's I had loaded. They were in old Federal Nickel cases with 74gr's of RL19, CCI250's.. These loads used to group at 1.5" at best from this rifle with the old stock. They were running about 2750 out of my rifle today, so I think if I wanted to, I could lean on them a little. Should be an easy 2850 load I think.
I shot the first group, made a dope change and shot the 2nd one. Either way, both are pretty decent. Kinda makes me wonder if I shouldn't monkey around a little more with them. I do have a bunch of 250's though. I think they are going to be my emphasis for awhile. Wanna see what I can get out of them.
The 264 shot pretty well with RL25, it pushed the 140 AB at 3030 or so. I think there is some merit to it. Just gotta work a little more with it.
I had some loads with Retumbo and the 140 AB, but the initial load was leaving slight marks, so I just left the rest. I will pull them and drop back further. Retumbo seems to be very accurate, just getting a consistent load with it is the trick.
My son's rifle shows alot of promise with the 160 PT and RL17. This load ran right at 2700 and seems like it could be a good one.
Overall, it was a pretty good day out on the range. It was a little cold at 29*F here, with freezing rain.
