Well, I had a chance to get out and shoot some rounds today. Found a new range 15 miles from my house! I had no idea it was there. It only runs Sept-Mar, but heck, when you wanna get youre fix, you gotta get it! It is actually a very nice 100 yard range. Covered and everything. Very nice target stands. No range officer! It is on state owned land, and seems to be a well kept secret. Heck, I have been here for almost three years and never thought about it.

Anyhow, first up was the M70 300WSM. I ran some loads with 180 AB's and RL19. I used CCI250's and WW brass for these. Anyhow, groups were decent around 1.5" or so and speeds were where they should be, but I was starting to worry, it wasn't really bringing them in like I thought, till I got here.

69.5gr RL19 (3029-3035-3027)

IMG_0739.jpg

I was pretty happy with that load. May load 10-12 of them and head back out tomorrow to verify what I have, but I am pretty hopeful.

I also ran some 168 ET's through the rifle. Nothing really special and speeds were pretty poor. I used RL19 and the guidance Nosler put out that says to use Mid loads as your max. Well, they were kinda 308 like...

64.5 - 2750, 2751, 2750
65.0 - 2807, 2811, error
65.5 - 2850, 2870, 2850
66.0 - 2867, 2867, 2860

Nothing special. Groups in the 1.5" range. I think if I leaned on them a bit, they might come in some. Not sure though. That is a long way off from the 3100 I was looking for.

The little 7x57 Featherweight of my boys did pretty danged good. I boresighted it and used some old Remington 175gr RN stuff I was given. It was very fun off the bench and just for the record, three of them ran across the screens at 2346, 2318, 2358 and printed into a 1.5" group or so.

It is kinda hard to make the three out as I fired on the same targets when I started with the BT's on accident. Nothing too shabby though. Seems like the rifle shoots.

Then I moved onto my loads using the RL19 and the 140 BT's. Speeds were fair, but things started to look up when I shot this group of 51.5.

I moved onto 52gr's (2714, 2703, 2699) and got this one.

So the rifle shoots pretty well. I was pretty happy with it.

I also shot my TC Venture 22-250 with the 60 PT and RL15. The load used to shoot really well in my old Savage and I had high hopes it would do okay in the new rifle, since it has a 1/12" twist as well.

35gr RL15 - CCIBR2 and the 60gr PT

I got that rifle zeroed up and ready to hunt coyotes should I get the chance!

I also rezeroed my 35 Whelen. I fired 3 quick ones over the chrono to check it, they came in right at 2639 avg and printed this. Nothing great, but decent for me just checking the zero. I know the rifle will do better, but I wasn't as focused as I need to be with the big guy.

Overall, it was a great day. Looking forward to working some more with the little 7 and the 300WSM. Seems like they are both going to work out pretty well.

Oh, anybody with any good advice for the 168 ET's, let me know. I am .100" off the lands already. I am sure I could get the accuracy I want, but under 2900 with a 168 out of the 300WSM is a little too slow for me to mess with it. Pressures were fine. Nothing out of the ordinary, but I don't think I could get much more RL19 in the case as these were already compressed. Pretty sure I couldn't add much powder to it, at least to make a difference.

Scotty, I'm not sure what you can do as far as slower powders than RL19, as I'm not at home with my loadbooks right now. I'll try to look a bit tonight after I get the kids to bed and see what I can find. I'd go to the slowest powder you could find that will fit in the case (and maybe that's an issue with what you found with RL19). Maybe MagPro? Not sure where that hits in the burn rate chart. Anyway, try that, and move them out to about .050" off the lands (which should help just a smidge with case capacity). It may be that the E-Tips aren't for the shorter cases, due to volume issues?

The data looks pretty good. That's great to find the range. It looks as if someone has invested some time making it comfortable and functional. On the 168 grain E-Tips, try a faster powder (e.g. RL15) and see what you get.

Sounds good Mike and Dubyam! You two have me rolling in exact opposite directions, but I will try both and see what happens. I was kinda thinking if I could get 3100 out of the ET, I would use it, since it should perform like a 200 on game and fly a bit flatter. I am not super concerned with it though. I will work with the rest of the box I have and see if I can make something happen. I have both Magpro and RL15, so both of those are a go... Scotty

Scotty

Nice range! I wonder why you can't shoot handguns?

The 7x57 Mauser is a shooter! The 140 gr PT at 2700 fps is plenty.
I agree with Mike, give RL 15 a try with the 168 gr ET in your 300 WSM.
The 35 Whelen is a known so no worries there.

Good range session.

Dang you anyway Scotty or should I say SJB. Now I'm going to have to get busy as there are no excuses not to try some of that darned old R19 in my 300 WSM.

Nice job by the way. Pretty nice digs to shoot at too. A little more spangly than your old place!!

Love that 7x57mm

I concur. I'd love to pick up one like it. And that one looks to be a shooter!

Cut a buddy some slack. We can shoot handguns and "Other Stuff" at the old place.

Nice find. Did they charge you for use or is it a free state facility?

Looks like you have a few loads to work with here.

The 60gr NPs out of a 1 in 12 barrel are hit or miss and it looks like you hit! My friend's Venture in .243 shot three different loads superbly in it's maiden voyage. I was impressed and it looks like yours has potential too. You don't have too many rounds down this tube, right?

The WSM shows promise and the 7x57 looks great! Hopefully your follow-up loads will duplicate. Looks like your son has another nice rig. Is this his first gun? Not sure if the .243 is a family loaner. ?? If so, I'm sure he'll remember this gun forever.

Nice shooting Scotty, that 7x57 sure is shooting well, your son will get a great gun. As for the 300 WSM when I had one one of the best loads I had was RL 15 with several 165 gr bullets, charges were 59.5 or 60 gr depending on the bullet used. Speeds for that load were in the 3050 fps range and it kicked noticeably less than a 180 gr Protected Partition with 69.5 gr H 4831 SC which was also outstanding BTW.

I'm just giving you guys some grief. Anyplace you can go shoot is a good place!! Anyplace you can enjoy yourself and your family like you guys did with the kids and crew!

Great looking set of rigs there man! That 7mm will be a great setup for Junior. A keeper for sure.

I also experienced some slower speeds with the E-Tip in my .270; lots of readings in the 2800s with H4831, but I finally cracked 2900. I tried H100V as well, and while speeds picked up, accuracy fell off. I'll watch with interest to see your results.

Well i think you found the Mauser's calling now all you need is a couple hundred rounds loaded up for practice.

Yeah, I think I still have some work to do. I will check the 7x57 today and the 300WSM load as well. Looking forward to trying out the RL15 data I was sent. Seems both of them might work decent with RL15..

Nice work buddy! I need a day at the range like with some results like that pretty bad!

Jake, the 300 shot excellent again. I think it'll get better to as the barrel breaks in further. My other M70's seemed to do the same so I don't think this one will be much different. My boys 7 Mauser is a really good shooter as well. Another three shot group about the size of a nickel. Pretty pleased with those Featgerweights. Scotty
